May 20, 2019: Return of the Jake

posted in: Cubs | 0

Ah, my heart… don’t think I’m ready for the return of the Jake.  It is cold today, but I think the rain will hold off.  When the Cubs take on the Phillies tonight, they will see a familiar face on the mound, in a Phillies uniform.  Jake Arrieta will make his first start against the Cubs since his departure after the 2017 season.  Forget about the cool fact that the Cubs are the only MLB team that he has not faced; seeing Jake pitch in Wrigley will bring back many memories.  Seeing him pitch AGAINST the Cubs…  makes me upset.

Sure, was Jake really worth the contract he got?  Has he performed up to that level for the Phillies up to this point?  Not necessarily.  But the decision on Jake will be forever linked to the signing of Yu Darvish.  As if it wasn’t hard enough seeing Jake in another uniform… you’re telling me it was either him or Yu?  Can we have a mulligan?

Maybe it’s not that simple; these things never are.  But seeing what we’ve gotten out of Yu thus far…  Even at this point in the season, which is further along than he got last year, it feels like Darvish is the #5 starter.  He’s getting paid like a #1 starter for those keeping track at home.  Yes, he’s contributed more than last year… that wasn’t hard to do, and yes, I can’t blame him for his injury last year, but… are we still supposed to be giving him the benefit of the doubt at this point?  Is he still recovering from that injury?  Will it take until the 2020 season to see what we expected to see from him?  Because at this point, being the Cubs 5th starter, he’s totally replaceable.  Thing is, his money is not; there are no refunds.  We cannot have a “take back”… there is no bringing Jake back instead of him; that sucks.

This is why tonight’s game will be hard to watch.  Jake is a legend around these parts.  He was a HUGE part of the Cubs team that won the World Series.  For a while there, he was the best pitcher in baseball.  Being at the game where he got his 20th victory back in 2015… I’ll never forget it.  Seeing how he pitched in the postseason, when it mattered the most, nobody will ever forget it.  The whole way it ended… he said/she said… squabbling over money… disagreeing on contract length… whatever the case may have been…  is a part of the business, as we fans are forced to understand, but it still sucks.

I look forward to the extended video tribute to Jake on the big screen tonight; there is no shortage of material.  I will be rooting for Jake tonight, but that doesn’t mean I want the Phillies to win; no one individual comes ahead of wanting a Cubs victory.  Yet, to see Jake shutout the Cubs for 6 innings, before we come back to win the game, would be OK with me.  Seeing Yu get rocked at the same time, would not be surprising.  One big example of a wrong decision by the Cubs will be on display tonight at Wrigley.  Missing Jake certainly outweighs dissing Yu, yet the two will forever be linked.  Jake will forever be revered, while Yu, well, let’s just hope he starts giving us some material for his future video tribute… Go Cubs!
