I was happy to find out the news a couple weeks back that I was going to be coaching my son’s team again. I really enjoy coaching. Teaching kids how to play baseball while having fun at the same time. It’s great to see these kids do well. It all starts with practice time.
Our team had its first two practices this week. When we first started on Thursday night, and the kids were playing catch, I thought… this is going to be a long year. As the practice went on, and we practiced running the bases, and fielding ground balls, I felt a lot better. These kids can actually play. They are all really good at fielding ground balls, and in this age group, that will be critical. Yes, they’re not that great at catching a thrown ball, but we only need a few kids who can do that, and they will be at first base. As the first practice came to an end, I told them how happy I was with it. I told them, although we missed balls and made some bad throws, overall, everybody did good. After all, this is what practice is for… to get better.
With the weather still touch and go, I wasn’t sure if we’d make it on the field this week. When we showed up Saturday morning, although a few wet spots, we were taking this show outside. It was so much better than being in the gym… although the gym worked great too, especially at this stage of the season. But being on the actual field, is where it’s at. Because of this, we actually used the real league balls for the first time. The kids got to hit for the first time too. Again, I was happily surprised. Yes, we had balls that were overthrown, dropped, and covered in mud, but the fact that each and every one of the kids hit the ball when I pitched to them… that was very encouraging. Sure, there were swings and misses too, but again, that’s why we practice. The fact that they all put the bat on the ball in their first chance to hit was very good.

I told them that’s how we’ll start every time. For the first 15-20 minutes, this is what we do. I’ll bounce around and play catch with each of them, as well as, switch them up too. Not only is it a good opportunity to see how each kid is doing individually, but it’s a good way for the kids to get to know each other, and get a chance to play with each kid on the team. Building our team is very important to me. Part of that is getting to know each other, and the most basic part of that is knowing each other’s names. I memorized their names from the first time they told me them, which is actually pretty strange, considering I’m horrible at names. But with these kids, with my kids, the names stick quick. I’m constantly calling them out by their names; we even incorporate this into practice with a quick roll call in a quiz form, asking the kids who this is, and who that is. Not everybody knew my name yet… haha. Practice, right!
More to come… I will be posting regular updates about our team. This is actually one of my favorite “features” throughout the year, chronicling my son’s teams throughout the seasons. It’s one of those things that I hope he looks back at one day, and reads about. And when he reads it, it will bring back great memories of time spent with his dad. Schedule and uniforms coming next week… now only if it stops raining…
