May 17, 2019: Present Day

OK, back to the present day… And no team currently makes me happier to be in the right now than the Chicago Cubs. You know, I wasn’t even that mad that they lost the series to the Reds. After all, 10 series in a row without losing one… come on, you could say we were due. Yes, losing that 2nd game was a bit hurtful, especially with the lead late, even as we tacked on insurance runs, and still blowing it. The final game of that series, after a lengthy rain delay, just looked like the Cubs wanted to get out of there. And they did, losing 2 games in a row for the first time since April 26th.

The last time they lost 3 games in a row was during their 6 game losing streak that first week of the season. Doesn’t that seem like such a long time ago? Yes, losing 3 games in a row would not happen this evening in DC, but one guy hitting 3 home runs in a game would. I think it’s safe to say Kris Bryant is back. He’s been zoned in… he’s been heating up… tonight, he boiled over. His 3 home runs in one game will get a bit more attention than his solid ABs game in game out. The Cubs poured it on in this one, winning 14-6.

Staying a bit with the memory lane theme, I told my son who was matched up today in this one. Hamels vs Scherzer. If that memory of mine serves me correctly, the last time these two tangled was a Sunday night nationally televised game at Wrigley last summer. That night where a true pitching duel ensued; that night where Mad Max shut us down. We would find ourselves behind that night, 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, some guy named David Bote would stand at the plate and deliver the most memorable moment of 2018 for the Cubbies. We remember it fondly. Definitely the most watched AB of my young son’s life. Over and over… still reenacted today on the base paths. I also remember that I didn’t see it happen live, as my wife and I were catching up with one of our shows. But like any of those moments, I would much rather miss one and have it happen, then watch it and see it not happen, if that makes any sense.

I was watching every pitch down the stretch in this Friday night series opener, as the Cubs poured it on. Loved the 3 dingers from Bryant, but loved the Schwarber AB more than anything. With the game still very much competitive, on the 13th pitch of the at bat, Kyle lined one over the fence. As Schwarber sits in the free agent pool in my fantasy league, I ponder a pickup… Nah, not yet. But quietly, Kyle has been zoning in lately as well. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him take off soon as well.

Yep, give me that W to start the weekend, and feed me more of the Brewers and Cardinals getting blown out as we extend the first place lead to a game and a half. Next up, Mr. Lester on the mound… Go Cubs!
