May 14, 2019: Unlucky Seven

It was draft lottery night.  I made sure we ended our backyard baseball in enough time to get my son inside, showered, and seated in front of the TV to see the Bulls win the Zion sweepstakes.  As the teams started being unveiled, he wanted to see the Bulls symbol.  I told him, no… we DON’T want to see the Bulls… not yet at least.  Then the #7 pick in the draft was announced… and it was the Bulls.  Unbelievable!!!  We got screwed.  I was not happy.

Next, the phone rang; it was my father in law.  We both started bitching about what transpired, including how fixed this whole thing is… especially with the Lakers jumping up to the top 4.  I was going to be extremely pissed if they got the #1 pick.  Thankfully, that fear ended quickly, when they were selected to get the #4 pick; still BS, but at least it wasn’t worse.  I thought to myself, since the Bulls were out of it, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Knicks get that #1 pick.  Yes, a long time has transpired from those battles with the Knicks in the 90s… all of which we won by the way, except the whole Hue Hollins BS call which cost us the series.  I guess I’ll have to settle for the 6 titles the Bulls DID win in the 90s.  The Knicks had their chance in 1994 & 1995, when MJ was retired and then rounding back into form.  They blew it, and then their window was closed shut.  Yeah, seeing Zion play in the Big Apple would have been cool.  But, the #3 pick was awarded to the Knicks.  Then it boiled down to New Orleans and Memphis; 2 very attractive options for a mega star like Zion.  The Grizzlies pulled 2, so Zion is going to the Pelicans.  Best thing about that is the whole Anthony Davis thing.  He wanted to be traded, and supposedly still does, but now they’re getting the next big thing in Zion… hilarious.  Maybe he changes his tune, or… the Pelicans get a nice haul for him and build around Zion.  Pelicans come out golden either way… good for them.

Back to our Bulls… people were jumping off cliffs after the unlucky seven announcement.  It doesn’t matter all the guys the Bulls have picked at 7 or later that have become stars…  it doesn’t matter all the great NBA players that have been picked at 7 or later.  It’s all about faith in GarPax; saying that is little would be an understatement.  We were hoping to get 1 or 2… meaning Zion or Ja…. they couldn’t screw that up.  But now, they have their opportunity.  I’m not on that cliff.  Yes, I don’t trust in GarPax, but… I do see the makings of a good team already on the roster.  Yes, it didn’t equate to much last year, but with Zach, Lauri, Otto, and Wendell, we have 4 pretty solid starters.  Thing is, the NBA is a superstar league; which one of those 4 will be that guy?  Really, we need at least 2 stars minimum… that’s why the whole Jimmy Butler thing… but then he turned straight diva… forget it.  Adding some more talent to this roster is inevitable, which should equal more wins…  If the talent is the right talent, and our current talent stays healthy, we could see the playoffs… from the court, not our couches… next year!  Yeah, I said it.  Look, at least we locked up Boylen…

I was just as pissed with the results of the draft lottery, but all is not lost.  Hoping GarPax do the right thing is a shaky endeavor, but that’s where we’re at right now.  Like it or not, Bulls fans ’til we die.  Go Bulls!
