May 13, 2019: Rightful Place

The Brewers came into town looking to claim first place, or at least a share of it.  After winning the first game of the series on Friday, all they had to do us split the remaining 2 games and that would be the case.  Well, it wasn’t meant to be.  A marathon game on Saturday highlighted by the Cubs 3rd walk off win of the week, followed by another Sunday night national TV affair that the Cubs took down, results in the Cubs being in their rightful place, on top of the NL Central Division.

The Cubs are rolling, and that’s putting it mildly.  The Cubs are a MLB best 22-7 since April 8th.  They have a 2.33 ERA in that timeframe, which is also a MLB best.  (Thanks to @ckamka).  They have not lost a series in their past 10 series, with the only non-series win (tie) coming against the Angels, when the last game of the series was PPD.  It’s runs like this that make fans think that THIS could be the year.  It brings back memories of that other year… that other year being 2016 where the result was heavenly.

It’s not the first time I felt like that since then.  Sure, the first half of the 2017 season was a throw away, but there were moments down the stretch that season that made me feel pretty good.  The series win against the Nationals, especially how it ended, certainly had the mojo going.  There were stretches earlier in 2018 that brought back some goodness.  Certainly not the end of the season… God no, not that train wreck, nor the last 2 games of the season, but there was a while there where things were looking good.  But the last 2 years did NOT have that divine ending.  How will this year be different?

One of the things I remember from 2016 was all the talk about run differential.  The Cubs were leading the league in that by a long shot all year long.  I know there are a ton of different metrics/stats to look at… you can cut this stuff every which way, but when I look at run differential this year through the first 38 games of the season, the Cubs are tops in the NL and only behind Tampa Bay and Houston in the AL.  Houston by the way has played 4 more games than us.  Just something that sticks in my head from that year… how the Cubs were dominating opponents.  I don’t necessarily see it that way yet this year, but the numbers are what they are.  The Cubs have scored double digits in 7 games thus far, losing 2 of them.

Another thing that I look at is a team’s record in 1 run games.  7-4 is the Cubs record thus far.  Again, only one of countless ways to measure a team, but an important one I think.  How about walk off wins?  I’m sure there is a way, maybe a paid way, to find out this information, but how about 3 in a week?!?!  That has to be some kind of record, no?  That brings the total to 4 this year… That’s a pretty good pace.  These are the type of wins that really bring out those feelings… the best kind, that make you think of the best result for a season.  Yeah, I’m there.

But the Cubs aren’t yet… only 124 games left to go… Good God, that’s a lot of baseball remaining.  But right now, to this point, confidence is very high.  I’m ready to see that 2nd World Series in my lifetime… but first, let’s just win this series against the Reds.  Go Cubs!!!
