It’s about that time of year… baseball season is starting up in the Chicago Park District. We had our first practice of the year this past Saturday.
We’re making the leap this year. That 4-6 year old business is over; my newly turned 7 year old son and I are moving on up to the 7-9 year old division. He’ll go from being one of the oldest kids in the league, to one of the youngest. How will this year go? We found out some information already. We’re not going to be the Cubs; that name has already been taken, and practically owned by one of the coaches for the past 20 years. Being a newbie to this division, I had no say in that one. So, we had to pick another team. When I first walked into the coach’s office, my name was next to none other than the St. Louis Cardinals. I immediately requested that NOT be our team name. That was fine, but options were limited due to the uniform colors in supply for this year. One of the other colors available was green, and that is how the Oakland Athletics were born. Next question I had was about players that I wanted on our team. There were 2 other kids making the leap with us that I wanted to ensure were on our team. Each coach gets a number of “protected” players. They were more than wiling to accept my 3 players, especially because they are all new 7 year olds. I looked at the roster of kids to see if there was anybody else I knew… no luck. The rest of the team would be drafted the following week.

Other coaches were doing the same. This brings us to my favorite moment of week 1. One of the other coaches came up to me after practice, and asked me what my kid’s name was. I told him, and he said “damn”… he was one of the kids they had targeted. That made me feel good… I was beaming with pride. I know my kid can play, but when other coaches say the same, especially in this 7-9 year old league with my son being one of the youngest… yeah, all that time playing baseball with him was on display. I told my son… it doesn’t matter about these kids in the league that are bigger, stronger, faster… YOU know how to play. You know how to catch, throw, and hit. You’re going to be just fine. After seeing the group of kids in this one practice, I already would put him in the top half of kids talent wise; by the end of the year, he’ll be much better… at the start of next year, he’ll be one of the best. We’re getting ahead of ourselves though…
So the Oakland A’s… don’t have many green shirts; may still have to lean on the never ending collection of Cubs t-shirts to get through the year, except when we play them I guess. Can’t wait to get going again… now if only the weather will cooperate. Looking forward to another fun year.
