Here we go again… life gets busy and the blogs fall behind. But have no fear… I will catch up like I always do. It started on Wednesday actually… life getting busy. Work along with one of my newer responsibilities kicked my ass from start to finish that day… I did peek at the cell phone at one point to see the Cubs were kicking the Mariners ass; I’ll take that trade off all day. Meaning, I’ll take a rough day if it means a Cubs W; I’ll miss the game as long as they win. There has been a lot of that going on.
Lester was the man of the day in that last tilt vs Seattle; what a game. Getting him back in the rotation that has been hitting its stride was a good thing. After the game, I saw some stuff about Lester potentially being the best free agent signing in Cubs history; I also saw talk about him being the best free agent signing in Chicago sports history. Let’s start there.
Let’s start with the Cubs free agent signings. First one that comes to mind, after Jon Lester, is Alfonso Soriano. Back then, weren’t really used to the Cubs paying a lot of money for anybody. When they finally broke the bank, I was happy. I knew of Soriano… was happy with the move. Getting a slugger in his prime for all those years and cash, bring it on. He did carry us for stretches, but his fielding technique, and his habit of swinging at pitches out of the strike zone, especially in big games… like the playoffs… soured his stay here. Lester easily ranks ahead of him. The next guy that pops in my head is Andre Dawson…. not too shabby a free agent signing. He of course would win the MVP award with the Cubs, on a last place team unfortunately. Loved the Hawk; he loved us too. Don’t think I can put him ahead of Lester though, considering Lester was part of THAT team. Jon was a signing that helped make the Cubs the place to be. He’s pitched many big games for us. He’s still safe at 1. Certainly not going to be threatened by Heyward, Darvish, or Chatwood, to name a few from recent history. Although Moises Alou can certainly slide his way up the list, I think Lester’s spot is safe at the top of Cubs free agent signings.

First guy that comes to mind is maybe the only guy that can knock him off; that guy is Marion Hossa. Can you say 3 Cups? Yes, I know the Cubs win was historic, but the Blackhawks had a drought of their own. And yes, I know the Cubs aren’t done yet, but the Hawks capitalized on this signing and that team with 3 Stanley Cup Titles. Last time I checked 3 is greater than 1. Hossa has to be #1 on the list when looking at Chicago team FA signings… at least until the Cubs and Lester win another couple…
We’ll stop there for now… still got some catching up to do. To get back, let’s catch up with each of our teams, and see what’s been going on. Then we’ll get back to the team of the moment…
