April 25, 2019: Winning Series

That’s the name of the game isn’t it?  Winning series.  That route will get you 2/3 of the 162, which comes out to 108 wins.  That should be plenty to get into the postseason, and should be more than enough to win the division too… home field throughout?  Yep, and all we have to do is win series.

The Cubs have been doing exactly that.  Yeah, Thursday was a dud against the Dodgers; it’s not like we didn’t have our chances.  But the first 2 wins were already in the bank.  2 out of the 3 over the Dodgers, 2 out of 3 over the Dbacks.   A sweep against the Marlins.   A tie against the Angels due to the postponed game.  And before that, a series win against the Pirates.  Since that last loss in Milwaukee, the Cubs have went 10-4; now that’s what I’m talking about.  And yes, some of it has come against teams that maybe aren’t so good, but what do you call the Dodgers?  It doesn’t matter who it’s against though, because a win is a win.  And the Cubs have been doing some of that lately.

It’s been primarily without Bryzzo.  Anthony is finally starting to wake up the bat, recently creeping over 200, while KB is heading down towards that mark as well.  Only 5 HRs combined thus far, which someone pointed out on Twitter, is less than Tommy LaStella’s home run total thus far.  That’s some funny shit.  I liked Tommy.  Glad he’s getting an opportunity elsewhere.  Do I wish it would have been here?  Sure, based on 1 month of results, but we should have more than enough to get the job done.  Baez has picked up where he left off.  What a home run the other day too, the 3 run bomb followed by the same from Heyward.  Those guys have been killing it.  Willson has been very good too; Bote solid.  And that so what acquisition of Descalso has turned out OK thus far too, huh?  He’s gotten some big hits.  Schwarby and Zorilla are still in neutral.  Almora has been disappointing thus far.  His bat hasn’t been able to keep up with his glove…  in fact, they’re not in the same state.  A web gem waiting to happen vs a sub-200 batting average.  Maybe the HR vs Jansen will kick start him.

The pitching has been the biggest reason for the resurgence.  Starters doing well; bullpen holding its own.  Really, it’s only been the 3 lefty starters that have been good.  The return of Lester rounded out that triple threat.  It’s been Hendricks struggling early, while we’re still waiting for Yu.  Hendricks continues to struggle getting out of the first, while Yu… well, let’s just say he seems to be getting better.  The 5 innings pitched in each of his last 3 starts is hopefully just the appetizer.  The fact that he’s still throwing hard at that point is encouraging.  I’ve said it before… let him loose Joe.  Take the training wheels off and let him earn his dough.

A quick look at the standings, and we’re now tied for 2nd place… ahead of the mighty Brewers… haha.  Yeah, it’s those pesky Cardinals that are on top… for now.  Time to start off this road trip with a W.  Go Cubs!
