Is the season already over? With a unexpected 3-5 start in the rearview mirror, the Bears begin the 2nd half of their season at Green Bay in primetime on Sunday night. Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide…
Going back to the 2009 season, the first season of the Cutler era, the Packers hold a 10-2 advantage over the Bears, including the playoff win. One of the wins against Green Bay in that span was with Josh McCown at starting QB. So yes, Cutler is 1-10 against Green Bay in his career here as a Bear. In thinking about my Cutler hate, it’s directly tied to this rivalry. It is UNACCEPTABLE to play this bad against Green Bay when you’re playing for the Chicago Bears. Since Jay Cutler has been the one constant during this stretch, I hold him accountable for this poor record.
Oh for the glory days between 1985-1992, when the Bears owned this rivalry, going 13-2 against the Packers during that stretch. Since then, Jay has not been alone. The Packers have pretty much owned the Bears for the past 20+ years. It hasn’t been as uneven as it’s been the past 6 years, but the Packers clearly hold the upper hand. When will the tide turn? It lasted pretty much through the entire Favre era, and now with Rodgers at the helm, is there any end in sight?
Now we look to Sunday night. We look for the Bears to save their season. It starts in Green Bay. What will it take for the Bears to rebound and make the playoffs? Some may say it’s too late already; probably most sensible people. But I still have hope… I still have hope that the Bears can pull off a 2nd half stunner and sneak into the playoffs. Will 9-7 get us in, or does it have to be 10-6? Either way, the miracle comeback must start with a win Sunday night. Not only because we need one to give us hope this season, but because of who it’s against. We need to break this slump. Heck, if any one game we win the rest of the season, let it be this one.
As usual, it starts with Cutler. However, with Green Bay’s horrible run defense, Forte can be the man leading the cause. If we can run successfully, that will make things easier for our boy Jay. So pound the rock, and ask Jay to play mistake free football. Isn’t that the formula for success most of the time? It will be Sunday night.
Running the rock keeps Green Bay’s offense off the field. They shredded us in our first meeting. We will have a couple guys back in our lineup that were not there the first time around with Jeremiah Ratliff and Jared Allen. Ratliff has been one of the bright spots, while Allen has disappointed. Together, can they put some pressure on Aaron? Again, pressure on the QB is something that will go a long way in trying to win this game. A turnover or two would be nice too. Since Briggs has eluded to his retirement after the season, maybe he can have a memorable final 8 games, and help us get one on Sunday night.

I’m going to skip special teams, and sit down for a second with Papa Vegas. The Packers are a 7-8 point favorite around town, and this feels about right. What does PV want us to do here? I’m betting most people will think Packers, especially if Sunday during the day is especially brutal. Sunday night rolls around, and you’re down $500… who you trying to make your money back on? Probably Green Bay, so that tells me lean Bears. Outright victory? Maybe, but cover for sure.
Final Score Prediction: Bears 24 Packers 20
Why not?
Ace in the Hole–> Matt Forte 150+ yards from scrimmage, 2 TDs
If Jay can’t do it, Matt sure can.
A loss Sunday night puts the Bears one foot in the grave, so I call this as MUST WIN game. The Bears are a more desperate team right now… or at least they should be. If they play like one, they’ll pull this out. If they play like they did the first half of the season, we can start writing their obituary. Go Bears!!!
