March 28, 2019: Not How I Drew It Up

We waited until the very last minute to do our Fantasy Baseball draft.  I did get a bit of research in the 24 hours before the draft on Wednesday night.  I was locked and loaded; I had my plan.  The thing is, the plan pretty much went to shit… starting with the first pick of the draft!  Now I’m not saying I ended up with a bad team, I’m just saying it was a different team than the one I planned to have; it’s definitely not how I drew it up.

And that’s OK… especially in an auction draft.  You have to be flexible.  If you get stuck on a guy, you could throw a wrench in your whole draft by drastically overpaying for him.  On the flip side, if a guy falls in your lap… if he’s at a price that you just can’t pass up, then you have to take him; that’s called value.  That’s what happened on the very first pick of the draft.

It was my buddy, the Reds fan in California.  He threw out Baez as the first player up for auction.  He knew the draft was loaded with Chicago guys, and that we would be overpaying for Cubs players.  I had my Cubs guys on my radar, but Baez wasn’t one of them.  Yet, when the clock was ticking down and somebody had him locked at $26, I couldn’t resist.  I threw a bid out for $27, figuring there’s no way this Javy goes for less than $30.  Well, Baez became my first pick at $27.  Value city.  Same thing happened with my 2nd pick.  I had Carlos Correa on the radar; I had him on my team during his rookie year I believe… absolute stud.  He wasn’t a must have, but again, when he was sitting at $20, I had to throw $21 out there; yep, I got him for $21.  So 2 guys for what I thought I’d have to pay for one of the top guys I wanted.  I had Kris Bryant, Chris Sale, and Freddie Freeman tabbed as my top 3.  I had none of them yet.  And after spending $48, how high was I going to go on Bryant, who came up next.  I stopped at $39, although I had told myself I’d go up to $50.  I was bidding against my brother; I knew he wanted him too.  I let him go.  Surely I’d get Sale… but as the price went up and up and up… it was me and another long time player in our league.  We had went toe to toe for Sale last year with me grabbing him.  This time he got him.  Sale went for $44.  I did have a 2nd pitcher tabbed if I didn’t get Sale.  I scooped Jacob deGrom for $39; I was happy with that.  I would definitely get Freeman, and did for another somewhat low price of $30.

The next guy was another value pick.  With the value I had got so far, I put Merrifield back in the mix for my next pick; I had scratched him out through process of elimination.  But when this next guy was thrown out there, the value bid kicked in again; I got JD Martinez for $31!  He wasn’t even on my radar.  So I paid like $9 more than Merrifield went for, and got JD instead.  It was $5 more than Benintendi went for who was on my radar.  Still, JD is a stud; I’m good.

Then late in the draft, things went haywire… literally, my internet was on the fritz.  I was so pissed.  It happened right before my pick.  I was going to grab Strop; instead it took my next player in queue which was Matt Strahm.  I’m not complaining about that, but he would have been there.  Then, somebody nominated the Cardinals closer.  I don’t get Cardinals on my team; principles man.  But somehow during the internet difficulty I bid on him, and got him for $2… pissed.  Then, to top it off, I missed out on a guy I was hot for; Nimmo from the Mets.  Internet came back for the rest of the dollar menu, and I did OK, but still… 3 guys impacted by that disaster.  Oh well.

Overall, I’m happy with my squad.  I hope that some of the things that happened were fortuitous… and it will all turn out golden.  Or, I’ll just have to work harder with trades and waiver pickups.  Either way, it meant one thing.  Opening Day was next!
