March 25, 2019: Feel It

posted in: Cubs | 0

Finally… finally I’m starting to feel it.  I actually tuned into a bit of Cubs spring training baseball yesterday.  Some guys I knew, some I didn’t, but every single one of them was hitting; it was great.  Then I saw it… the advertisement for Opening Day.  Jesus, it’s this week!  Yes, yes, yes… Cubs baseball is finally back.  Forget about “the first official day of spring”… forget about that damn groundhog… the day when baseball returns, is the day spring officially is here.  I know it doesn’t feel like it this morning in Chicago, with temperatures still in the 30s, but I don’t care.  I feel it.  I’m ready to go!

Will the Cubs be ready?  I read a great article on the way to work this morning.  I actually wasn’t packed like a sardine on the el this morning, and was able to read an article on my cell phone from The Athletic.  Greatest investment I made by the way; there’s some good shit on that website.  I read one of the latest ones about the Cubs… about how they’ve done their due diligence, left no stone unturned, in their efforts to ensure that this season ends differently than last season.  Last season’s ending sucked… it really sucked.  Letting the sorry ass Brewers pass us for the division in Game 163… unable to muster any offense against the worst playoff team in the Rockies.  Yeah, didn’t see that coming.  It was like a kick in the nuts.  Maybe it’s just what the Cubs needed.

In the article, they talk about taking advantage of the window; I couldn’t agree more.  Because you know what… time flies… and next thing you know, we’ll be looking at a different Cubs roster.  When that day comes, and these heroes from 2016 are gone, or retire, how many World Series titles will we be able to look back on?  This team that the Cubs have assembled is the best team in our lifetime.  I know last year was rough, but I still believe this is the golden era of Cubs baseball.  I’m ready to see it in full force in 2019.  The Cubs can’t just ride through the season on their talents alone; they need to work for it.  Everybody else seems to be getting better… trying to catch the Cubs.  They’ve fooled a lot of people.  Like in my recent Sports Illustrated, I almost threw it in the garbage when I saw where they pegged the Cubs to finish this year, behind both the Brewers and the Cardinals.  Dumb asses.  The Brewers were a flash in the pan, and the Cardinals will be in the mix, they are most of the time, but neither of them is better than the Cubs.  Now, we need the boys to go out and prove that.

I always wonder why I don’t really get into Spring Training… why this feeling that I am feeling right now takes so long to return after the end of baseball season.  Opening Day of baseball is like no other.  It’s the only day that everyone is undefeated… everyone is tied for first place (and last too, yeah I know)… hope springs eternal for every organization, big banks and little banks… powerhouses and dark horses.  It’s THIS feeling that I would love to bottle up, and carry with me 365.  But we know about the 162… we know about the rollercoaster… but the ride up to the top is starting…  On Thursday, we will take that first big dip into the season.  I can’t fricking wait.  Go Cubs!!!
