March 10, 2019: Division Woes

posted in: Bulls | 1

The Bulls have shown some flashes recently.  They’ve shown how they can play; the problem is that we haven’t seen that consistently.  Hell, we’ve barely seen it at all.  19 wins on the year?  Horrible.  And yes, although we see promise, that is no guarantee.  What makes us think that the Bulls will be that much better next year?  Will they take the next step?  Sure hope so, but what about everybody else?

We all know about the Western Conference; Lequeen found out about that this year.  But we don’t have to worry about them until the very end.  The East is where it starts, and to go a step further, the Central division.  Yeah, remember those teams?  The Bucks, Pacers, Pistons, and Cavs are in there with us.  We played 16 games vs them this year, and won exactly 3.  Yep, 3-13 against this group of teams, with all the wins coming against the Cavs.  That’s the worst since the divisions were realigned in 2004 per @JeffGurt on Twitter.  Taking a closer look at those teams shows us the best team in the East with the Milwaukee Bucks.  They’ve past us, and are not looking back.  As long as they have the Greek Freak, they are going to be tough to beat.  The Pacers are playoff bound as well.  Even with Oladipo going out for the year, they are still playing good ball, although that will definitely catch up to them in the playoffs.  The Pistons just finished sweeping us.  They’ve really been a surprise; are they on the upward trajectory.  Even the Cavs… they’re beating us in the tank race, so they’ll have another top draft pick coming.  Just because the Bulls are seemingly improving, doesn’t mean everybody else hasn’t, and isn’t already ahead of us.  It’s time to catch up.

A draft pick will help that.  The Bulls will get a top pick; how high will depend on how lucky we get.  Who do you want?  That’s a conversation for another day, but if it is the PG Morant, how do you feel about the starting lineup of Morant, Lavine, Porter, Markkanen, and Carter Jr?  Sounds good on paper.  We’ve seen each of them do damage at certain points.  Will it be enough to get back into the playoff picture?  How about with Boylen leading the charge as coach?  The Bulls will NOT be paying a 3rd coach next year; remember they will already be paying FredBerg and Boylen.  So it’s Jim’s show next year.  And then with GarPax still at the helm… how much do we trust them?

It’s a reality check for me.  It’s been a lot more fun watching them play as of late, but they have a long way to go to be serious contenders.  Sure it could happen next year, but next year could also be a 30 win year.  Still a big improvement over this year, but just another step.  Maybe the following year we go 500 with our new coach.  Maybe in 2022 we make a run?  I don’t like this reality check.

I want to live in that world where the Bulls will be in the playoffs next year.  All our young guys take the next step in their development and fiery Boylen leads us to a playoff matchup.  Then after an early exit, we hire a new coach, and make a run in 2021.  That’s the quickest it could happen.  But then what about the rest of the league?  I already talked about the West and our own division woes.  How soon will the Bulls be good again?  I’m ready now.  Go Bulls!

19 wins with some of them coming vs some decent teams. Still pretty bad just like their record against their division foes. Guys show flashes of greatness, like Lavine, Markk, and Otto, but there is just not enough of it. The inconsistency is still rampant. Will another top pick help that? Sure, load up on the talent and see what happens, but aside from a top pick, the Bulls need to land a big free agent. Who is going to take a chance on the Bulls in their current state with Garpax and Boylen at the head? Garpax needs to go. Boylen will go after one more year. In the meantime, they need to sell the Bulls’ future to these free agents. I just don’t see that happening this offseason, which means another year of under .500 and no playoffs. Maybe they start competing in 2021, but more likely 2022 and beyond. What a mess. Yes, we are ready, but not really sure anybody else is wanting to be that guy here. Until then, GO BULLS!
