March 8, 2019: Passing MJ

posted in: Bulls | 1

During all this time, I missed a great achievement.  LeBron was busy passing MJ on the all-time scoring list.  What a great accomplishment!  He is truly awesome!  He is the GOAT….

OK, I’m back… I didn’t want you to think I was sick, and that’s why I’m so behind.  I’m healthy OK, just messing with you.  I will say this:  it was a great achievement.  I saw Twitter out in full force shitting on the accomplishment… throwing all kinds of MJ stats… all the extra games it took Lebron to do it… etc, etc, etc.  And don’t get me wrong; I loved each and every one of those things that I read.  But… in this case… I do have to give it to LeBron.  Yes, I’m actually giving the guy I hate the most in sports some credit.  It’s a testament to his longevity, to his great play over many, many years.  That’s all OK?  I just hate that people always go to the “he’s better than MJ now” thing.  Although I understand it… that’s what gets people riled up… that’s what gets those clicks.  If we all just acknowledged the truth, that MJ will NEVER be passed as the GOAT, half the attention the NBA gets would go away.  So I get it…

And I’m actually getting less pissed about it this year.  I know that MJ is the GOAT; nothing will ever change that.  The real argument is for who’s next; I think I’ve mentioned that before.  Actually, it’s even more than that.  Start ranking players by position by era; that’s where this exercise should start.  From there, take the 5 best from each era at each position.  From there, weed out the top 3 of all time at each position; there’s your all time NBA team.  From there, pick a starting five; there’s your all time NBA starting five.  From there, pick one.  The easiest thing to do is work backwards; MJ is 1… now go.

I’m not going to do all of that… yet.  Where does Lebron fall in these rankings?  What position is he?  If we say he’s a small forward, is he the best small forward of this generation?  OK, maybe.  How does he stack up to the greatest small forwards from past generations?  Does he make top 3 at his position all time?  Maybe.  That would put him on the all time NBA team.  Now would he be a starter?  Like I said, I’m not going to go through all of this, but if you wanted to put him on the starting five, fine.  I may not.  I think he’d be on that top 15 though.

It’s fun to do; it’s fun to go back and try to rank the greatest to ever play the game.  It’s just frustrating that there is no real way to prove it.  It’s purely opinion.  Yes, stats can help us… no doubt.  Stats can get us 75% of the way there, maybe 50%?  Winning titles definitely factors in too.  What about the intangibles?  Like I said, there’s no easy way.  I’m just glad that it’s crystal clear who #1 is… after that, I really don’t care.

HAHAHA…don’t play. lequeen moving up the scoring list and passing MJ…good job. The longer you play, the more games you are in, more and more records will fall. Unfortunately, you will never be the GOAT no matter how many records you set or pass MJ in…bottom line, period, point blank, end of story. Who knows where lequeen would end up on an all-time team. Yes, he is and has been great, but it is not something I really want to think about…right now at least. MJ is #1 so work back from there, like you said. There would be no right answer to a top 5 or 10…merely opinions and everybody would have one. We know who the GOAT is and will always be…MJ!
