It was good to see Joakim back in the United Center on Wednesday night; man do I miss him. I miss that whole team; I hate the fact that they weren’t able to bring us home #7. They would definitely go on that list that holds my favorite Chicago teams to never have won a championship. Seeing him brought back all sorts of good memories. He certainly is no average Jo.
I tried a feature in this blog a while back… like 4 years ago at this point. It was called the Players Club. I checked the archive before I wrote this, wondering if I had written an homage to the Bulls big man for 9 years. And yes, yes I did; here it is: http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/april-7-2015-noahs-ark/
There’s a lot of stuff that I was going to write today that I wrote almost 4 years ago about Joakim Noah. My feelings haven’t changed. If there was one guy from that Bulls team that I would salute all day every day, it would be Jo… then Taj; it wouldn’t be Derrick. While Derrick brings lots of strong feelings back, no doubt, they are mixed feelings. They are the best of the best and the worst of the worst. With Joakim, it’s nothing but good stuff… after my initial feelings when they drafted him of course. My wife points that out to me; I don’t deny it. I didn’t like the pick; it was one of those few… OK, maybe more than a few… times I was wrong. I’m glad I was.

It was a glorious time for the Bulls; it brings back a lot of personal memories too. We had moved back to Chicago in 2009, and after renting an apartment for a year, we bought our condo in June of 2010. On the same day we closed on the condo, we said F it… if we’re going to be broke, let’s go all the way; we bought 2 season tickets for the Bulls. Out of all the years, that was by far my favorite.
We went to almost every game. We saw this Bulls team becoming great right before our eyes, before they really became popular. That was the first year Thibs was roaming the sidelines as well; I’ll never get over the Bulls dumping him. Yeah, I remember chanting from those 300 level seats… SCA-LA-BRI-NE. We chanted that a lot; there were a lot of wins at the UC that year. 35 of them to be exact during the regular season; not too shabby. So many great moments, the last of which was the ass kicking we doled out to the Miami Heat in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals; of course we lost the next 4 games. Instead of this being our first dues payment, the next playoff game we played would be the infamous Rose injury; the rest is history.
Yeah, seeing Noah sends me down memory lane. I stick by what I said 4 years ago too; I would take him on any all-time Bulls team. Best of luck to him; maybe one day he’ll return… he’d fit in pretty good with Boylen I think… haha…

Noah had average talent but made up for it and more with his effort and heart. The guy was raw coming out of Florida, I believe. I was also on that “did not like the pick” train. All of his offensive game was average…mid-range jumper, free throws, and post moves. Defensively is where he shined as well as just giving maximum effort every game. That is what we in Chicago like to see. Forget the flash and diva nonsense. Bring that work pail and bust your tail all the time. I think my fondest memory of Noah was that breakaway dunk and foul vs the celtics in the playoffs one year. Man, was he and the UC fired up! Noah made the most of his talent and career before the injuries started setting in. Not sure what he has left in the tank, but I’m sure it will all be emptied onto the court, like he always did.
