We’re back… It’s the return of my son’s sports adventures captured right here on a weekly basis. This time around it’s floor hockey. It’s the 4-6 year old league again, the last time around for this age group. Being one of the oldest kids, he should have a very good year.
As a coach, I always inquire about the Chicago team first. We were lucky in baseball; we’ve been the Cubs the past 2 years. In basketball, the Bulls were already taken; the Timberwolves were our choice. With Jimmy Butler (not any longer), Thibs (not any longer), and the rest of the ex-Bulls, this was an easy choice. In floor hockey, the Blackhawks were already taken; the secondary choice was an easy one here as well. Last year we were the Sharks; I was only the assistant coach then, and we were riding with the team name already in place. This year as head coach, I had a request. With one of his grandpas living in Las Vegas, and getting a t-shirt for them already, this year brought the birth of the Golden Knights in our floor hockey league. Lock and load.
Last week was the selection of teams. As usual, I’ll talk to the park guy and let him know the kids I would like to have. The basis of this request is kids that have played together on my teams in other sports in the past, as long as they are kids that come to every game. Besides my son, I requested 3 other players; unfortunately, I forgot about 2 ex-players from my team. As we split into our teams, I had another parent approach me; he wanted his son to play with one of the kids on my team. His son was currently on the team with 1 of the kids I forgot to request. Thus, we had our first draft day trade. The kid from my team went to the other team, and we got one of our ex-teammates back… and he’s got his own stick; definitely a good sign. Haha…

As head coach, I had to get into the “line changing” rotation part of the game, like I do in all the other sports; I loved it… it’s easy when you’re winning. I started the game with the best 3 kids up front; my son at center, the kid with his own stick at wing, and a regular on all our teams at the other wing. We came out pelting the net… hitting the side of the net, just missing the net… coming away empty. Meanwhile, the puck finally reached the other side, and rolled right past our goalie; the deficit was short lived. The pressure we were putting on eventually lead to some goals, and although the game remained relatively close, the outcome was never really in doubt. The final score was 8-4; that top line was responsible for 7 of the 8 goals, including 4 from my boy.
I’m going to try not to be overconfident yet. It’s only 1 week. We’ve been here before, where we looked like world beaters, and then came crashing down to earth. The rest of the team includes three 4 year old kids; I’ll definitely have to be smart in my line changes. I love to coach all the sports, and baseball has a special place in my heart, but man, this floor hockey stuff is really fun. Ready for a great season!

The Golden Knights! Time for my nephew to dominate the floor hockey league and sounds like he did just that in game 1. 4 goals and a W to start the year is a solid beginning. Always good to have some players that you have coached before, too. That way you know what to expect. Three 4 year olds will definitely challenge the line changes. Hope it will be a great floor hockey season. Go Knights!
