Onto my next team… the Chicago Cubs. If there is one team where we shouldn’t have shit negative to say, it’s the Cubs. Yeah, just like all my other teams, I’ll bitch about them; I’ll complain about not being able to win ANOTHER World Series… that’s crazy. We are truly living in bizarro world with our Cubbies, that’s for sure.
I was 8 years old when the Cubs finished higher than 500 for the first time. 1984 was a magical year. I didn’t realize how big a deal it really was, with the whole drought thing; it just felt good. I was just getting into sports… just starting to remember things; this was fun. Yes, and they broke my heart for the first time; F Steve Garvey and the San Diego Padres. Should have been the Cubs in that World Series against the Tigers. We waited exactly 5 years until the Cubs finished over 500 again; the year was 1989. Giants had a really good team that year too; it was a toss up… and of course, the Cubs lost again. Two losses in the playoffs in a row doesn’t make a pattern; two seasons over 500 in my first 13 years does though.
1993 was another year over 500; no playoffs that year. Then 1995; no playoff. Then 1998, followed by another playoff loss. That’s cool; 5 years over 500 in the first 22 years of my life… and a grand total of 3 playoff wins. You see where I’m going here, right? We’re talking about 500 seasons. Shall I go on? 2001 was the next year over 500; no playoffs. Of course 2003 is next; that was the real heartbreaker. We did win more playoff games in that one year than we did over the first 27 years of my life. We were supposed to be back in 2004; nope. We did finish above 500 though! 2007-2009 were all over 500; 3 years in a row! That equaled 2 playoff berths and exactly 0 playoff wins. Yeah. You know the story right? Then came this Cubs team… Ricketts, Theo, Joe, and the talent laden squad. Yes, the bar was set pretty low, but in the last 4 years, the Cubs have won 19 playoff games; the first 38 years of my life they won 9… no typo. 4 straight playoff berths has happened exactly zero times in franchise history; the last time we had more than 2 in a row was when we went to the World Series 3 straight years from 1906-1908; I remember it well… Speaking about the World Series, this Cubs team actually WON one!!! The curse is kaput… I crossed a huge item off my bucket list. My Chicago sports life was complete. I had seen it all.

In the last 4 years, we’ve seen 6. But Cubs fans are bitching… about this that and the other. Really?
I know I can fall into that category too, but then I need to slap myself. Yes, I think this Cubs team should win another title; yes, I want more than one. Who knows when the Cubs will be this good again; we need to take full advantage. But upset about the Cubs? Disappointed in a fricking offseason? Wow. Spoiled ass brats. We are living in the Golden Era of Cubs baseball. Enjoy it for Christ’s sake. Go Cubs!
