With the playoff matchup vs the Eagles on deck, I think to myself, what do I really have against the city of Philadelphia and its teams? I want to try to channel some hate. There are four teams to choose from; there has to be something.
What about the Sixers? I love Dr. J; one of my favorite old school players. Barkley never bothered me; the Bulls kicked their butts on the way to their first title. Iverson was OK; I don’t like the one highlight they like to show against MJ, but other than that… he just wrote an article giving praise to the one true GOAT; that was good. Butler just joined today’s Sixers; he may be full blown diva now, but I don’t hate the Sixers. Even though we never seemed to win in the Spectrum back in the day, I never built up any hate for them. OK, next.
The Flyers… there we go. I did build up some hate for them for a period of 6 games in 2010; that happens when you get in a long series vs a team, especially when it’s for all the marbles. But that hate was short lived once Kane put that puck in the back of the net. Even the old school Broad Street Bullies; I have nothing against them. And although we always struggle to win in Philly, no continuing hate for the Flyers.
OK what about the Phillies? They did have one of the ultimate Cubs killers in Mike Schmidt; I remember the 23-22 loss or something like that at Wrigley back in the day. I was OK with the Phillies beating the Rays in the World Series that year; that was the year I thought we’d meet them in the NLCS, but that didn’t happen. And now, Jake plays for them; not really feeling the hate for the Phillies…

I’ve never been there; we may be going this year for the first time to go see the Cubs play. Maybe I’ll have a stronger opinion then. But I plan on seeing the Liberty Bell, the Rocky statue, eating some Cheesesteaks… I love the whole Rocky series; I love the show Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I love the movie Silver Linings Playbook. OK this shouldn’t be that hard; let’s get back to the team at hand.
We beat them in the Fog Bowl. We did lose to them in 2002; I was actually in attendance for that one. That was one of the worst games I attended in person; remember leaving that game drunk and depressed… still, didn’t really hate the Eagles. They had a guy from Chicago at QB with McNabb; I even had his jersey that I wore in the Maddon Bowl days when my team was the Eagles. The Eagles played the Patriots in their last 2 Super Bowl appearances; who wasn’t rooting for the Eagles? I was happy when they beat the Pats last year. But now, we’ll face them again; will a loss to the Eagles build up some hate? I don’t think we’ll even have to worry about that.
But, I will say this; I didn’t need a whole blog to tell you that once that ball is kicked off tomorrow afternoon, the hate for the Eagles will be instant. It should only last for those 60 minutes, and we can move on after the Bears destroy them. What about their fans? They’re nuts, I respect that. Die hard fans at heart; they hate the Cowboys too… I can get behind that. But yes, I did see some dumb asses online this week, talking about how the Bears suck, how our pizza sucks, our Italian Beef sucks, how we’re only Khalil Mack and that’s it on defense, how the 1991 Eagles defense was better than the 1985 Bears defense… yeah, that’s all some pretty dumb shit. I guess that’s why it doesn’t really bother me, because it’s all false; a weak effort to talk crap. Come on Philly, I know you’re better than that. I know you’re still living that Super Bowl dream season, and may be a little off because of that, but that will all change Sunday.
The Bears have knocked out the Packers and the Vikings from the regular season. Now the Eagles will be our first victims of the postseason. BDN? That’s funny, but if a QB wins a Super Bowl for you, you’ll worship him too; that’ll be over soon too. He’ll be back to Little Dicky Nicky. And the Eagles fans can cry over some cheesesteaks while watching Rocky. Then they can go back to being a team I don’t mind, and a city I will still look forwarding to visit; just stay out of our way. When it’s all done, they’ll be hating us, and that’s OK, because when it comes to 2019, Philly won’t be that special after all. Bear Down!
