It wasn’t pretty, but it didn’t have to be. The Bears played the role of grinders and got the win on Sunday in San Francisco, and that’s all that really matters. Well, almost…
My biggest concern going in was avoiding further injuries. Seeing Hicks go down momentarily, then Fuller, had me more worried than the outcome of the game. With Bryce already most likely done, and Eddie hopefully returning for the playoffs, the biggest deal these last 2 weeks is staying healthy; getting the bye week would be a bonus. After all the week 16 results rolled in, it’s still a possibility.
We’ve been flexed… again. I feel like the Bears have played less games at noon on Sunday than they have in a long time. It makes sense though; they’re good again. It also makes sense to put teams vying for the playoffs and/or playoff positioning at the same time slot; no advantage for either team. Did Nagy already say he was going to rest the guys on Sunday, or did I just imagine that? Either way, I’d be OK, although would hate to go into the postseason after a loss. Let’s keep this mojo rolling.
There was a fortunate bounce in this game, when the ball went off Goodwin’s hands and right into Trevathan’s chest. The defense did it again. They played solidly the whole game, holding the Niners out of the end zone on the afternoon. I don’t care how bad a team is, doing that on the road in the NFL is still a nice accomplishment. The Niners have actually played better the last couple weeks: beating the Seahawks and giving the Bears a good game. It would be great if they had one more good game in them, and beat the Rams on Sunday. But then we’d have to beat the Vikings to get the bye, while the Vikings play for their playoff lives. It’ll be interesting to see it all play out.

If the Vikings win, then we’ll play them 2 weeks in a row. If we beat the Vikings, and the Eagles win, and the Rams win, we’ll play the Eagles. If we win and the Rams lose, we get the bye, which means we get the winner of the Rams and Eagles/Vikings game. Guess what? It shouldn’t matter. I’m sure Nagy will have the Bears ready to go whenever, whoever we play. Teams should be trying to avoid us and this defense.
Mitch played pretty well again. He did make a couple dumb plays, one improvising on a running play, and the other trying to force it into the end zone; thankfully there was a holding penalty called on Frisco for the 2nd one… so only 1 turnover. We’ll be relying heavily on Mitchell to eliminate the dumb plays in the postseason. Honestly, it looked like Nagy was trying some different stuff in this game. It’s about time to narrow down that playbook, reserving the bread and butter from here on out… well, maybe after next week; we don’t want to show all of our cards to the Vikings, although does it really matter? There are 15 weeks of film out there on each team; if you don’t already know your strengths and weaknesses and those of your opponent, then you’re in bigger trouble. What happens in the final week of the season shouldn’t change that.
One more week to go before we play in the postseason for the first time in 8 years; I can’t fricking wait. Let’s stay healthy boys. Bear Down!
