December 19, 2018: Nagy Claus

And on the 7th day of Bears-mas, Pace has brought to thee…

I’ve seen a lot of stuff out there; who is the most to “blame” for the Bears success?  There is no one right answer; there are many reasons why.  Obviously you have to give credit to Ryan Pace.  The jury was certainly deliberating the first couple years, but at this point, I think we can safely arrive at a verdict.  Yes, Pace has come through in a big way in the building of this team.  What about the McCaskeys?  Yeah, normally they take the brunt of our anger, and rightfully so.  But, who opened up the pocket books finally; Khalil Mack… Kyle Fuller…  and more importantly, let Pace do his job; give him the tools to succeed.  We have to give a nod that way don’t we?  Then the players… I talked a bit about them yesterday; there are many guys leaving it on the field.  And that vaunted defense?  Yeah, what about their coach?  Vic Fangio certainly deserves some recognition.  Hopefully he stays around…  But if I had to give one name, one person who is most responsible for this year, it’s Matt Nagy.

Maybe it’s because of the previous coaches we’ve had.  I remember being semi-excited when John Fox was coming our way; boy was I wrong.  And before him was Trestman…  sorry for even bringing it up.  Before that was Lovie; Lovie was OK.  He got us to the promised land, but couldn’t bring home the hardware.  There were a good handful of years there though, but I was OK moving on from him, although his last record was 10-6; boy what Trestman and Fox would do to trade for that.  Lovie was definitely the best of the last 5 coaches, with Jauron and Wannstedt the 2 preceding him; blah.  Before them it was Ditka; only the legendary George Halas would be ranked ahead of Ditka when it comes to Bears coaches.  But now we have a new entrant…

I was semi-excited when he was announced as head coach, although he was coming off a horrible come from behind loss in the playoffs as an OC; I was hoping he got that out of his system.  Matt Nagy came on the scene here in Chicago, and he had a plan.  He believed in his plan.  He got players to believe in his plan.  He’s not afraid to make decisions that he knows will be challenged by the media and fans.  He preaches family and treats guys accordingly.  He brings fire and passion to the sideline.  He stresses the importance of the fans.  When you listen to him talk, you can’t help but be impressed.  This is Nagy’s world we’re living in; so far so good.

You need a coach to bring it all together.  The same way the McCaskeys have left Pace do his thing, Pace appears to let Nagy do his thing; that’s very important.  The players would run through a wall for this guy; there were guys that were like that with Lovie to, I will say that.  The celebrations after a win are awesome, smartly taking a page out of the Cubs book; hopefully we will see the same end result with these Bears.

When he first came, both he and Pace downplayed this season.  While we thought 500 at the bare minimum, and if we got some breaks maybe sneaking in the playoffs… OK, I thought that… they wouldn’t promise us that.  They tried to manage our expectations if you will.  Go in with low expectations and be pleasantly surprised with the outcome.  Well, I’m very pleasantly surprised thus far.  Forget sneaking in the playoffs; we won the division.  There is no reason why it can’t be us representing the NFC in February.  These happy Bear thoughts just keep running through my brain… Nagy Claus has already delivered us an early Christmas gift; hopefully he’s got a few more left in the bag.  So bring on Frisco, bring on Minny, and bring on the damn playoffs!!!  Bear Down!!!
