December 2, 2018: Small Step

We didn’t think the Bears were going to win out, did we?  OK, small confession, I actually thought we had a chance, but… not worried… a small step backwards; we’re still in good shape.

Of course, you don’t want to miss any opportunity at another win in this league, especially when every other team in your division lost.  How about those Packers?  That made me feel better.  And then they fired their coach?  Well, was hoping he would coach them forever, but… hey, the Vikings lost too; wasn’t exactly rooting for the Patriots, but didn’t mind that win.  Oh yeah, the Lions for anybody still interested in their result; yeah, another loss.  8-4, still in first place, still in control of our own destiny.

It felt like we were in total control of this game, that is, after overcoming the second play from scrimmage.  Just don’t do anything stupid had to be one of the goals for Chase today, and he blew that out of the water right out of the gate.  An absolutely horrible throw… he actually had a few of those; lucky to get away with only 2 picks today.  Chase would make up for them with some nice throws down the stretch, helping send this game to OT (forget about what he did in OT).  All and all, he proved to be a very serviceable backup.  It wasn’t all his fault today.

A big turn of events happened right before the half when the Bears sacked Eli two times in a row, forcing the Giants to let the half tick away.  But Nagy smelled blood, and called a timeout.  Saquon had his best run of the first half against a prevent defense getting the Giants close to FG position.  After an Eli quick pass, their guy nailed a 56 yarder.  All of a sudden it was a 14-10 game.  No worries right?  Then the Giants pull off a trick play and just like that, we’re losing; that was a kick in the nuts.

Still shouldn’t be a problem.  That play on 4th down at the goal line was pretty sweet; after that play, it felt like we were in trouble.  How could it be?  After that dominant first half, only ruined by the very beginning and very end of the half, punctuated with an Akiem Hicks TD a la William “the Fridge” Perry, the Bears were actually losing!  What the heck?!?  After a punt was downed at the 1, another Bears miscue, a Gabriel fumble, gave the G-men that 2 score lead.  Over?  Nothing is over until we say it is!

A FG, onside kick recovery, and a Tarik Cohen TD pass (yes pass!) sent this game to OT.  But hold on just a second; did Nagy think about going for two points?  With our defense, why would he?  I’m OK with the call.  Going back to that timeout before the half, I’m not so pissed about that either.  It was aggressive, but that’s OK.  Just like the choice to kick the extra point to send this game to OT wasn’t aggressive, but I still liked it.

Hey, it was a good game.  It definitely was one we should have won, but winning on the road in the NFL is not easy.  That coupled with the fact that every other team in our division lost, I’m feeling OK.  Back to primetime next Sunday night vs the Rams; Trubisky should be back too.  Let’s keep it moving.  Bear Down!
