November 23, 2018: Let the Comparisons Begin

posted in: Bears | 1

It’s inevitable.  Once the Bears start getting good, here come the comparisons to the 85 Bears.  Some people get upset about that.  Either you’re just a grumpy old man, or you weren’t around to see them play.  Being compared to that team is an honor.  I would embrace that comparison, and at the same time, want to make my own legacy.  I think Coach Nagy gets that.

It’s not smart to push a team’s history aside.  You don’t have to live in the past to appreciate greatness.  It happened; it’s factual.  The 85 Bears are one of the greatest teams of all time, and if you’re from these parts, they’re the greatest to ever play.  We’ve been lucky like that…MJ, Sweetness, the 90s Bulls, the 85 Bears…legendary sports figures and teams that are forever etched in our memories.  It’s ok to remember them fondly; it’s ok to talk about them still to this day.  Memories don’t change even when everything else does.  It’s also great to make new memories.  This 2018 Bears team is starting to do exactly that.

The Lovie Bears provided a lot of memories too.  That 2006 season was magical, with the only thing missing being that cherry on top.  I know there have been a lot of painful losses over the years with our teams, but that Super Bowl loss to the Colts ranks right up there.  They were also compared to the 85 Bears.  The biggest reason besides the winning was the defense.  We live for great defense.  That 2006 team was awesome; that 1985 team was all time.  Where will this 2018 Bears defense rank?

The Monsters of the Midway are definitely back.  This defense is the best in the league right now.  One comparison that is easy to make is that Eddie Jackson reminds me of Mike Brown.  He’s got the nose for the ball; he has the knack for the big play.  I do think Mike was a bigger hitter, but Eddie can still lay the wood.  He has to be ticketed for the Pro Bowl.  He’ll have company.  Khalil Mack is as good as it gets.  Who can you really compare him too?  Plenty of great LBs to draw from.  But honestly, there is no good comp in my opinion.  He’s different.  What about Akiem Hicks?  Big guy with a motor causing havoc up the middle.  Tommie Harris from the 06 team was great at that.  Hampton and Mongo from 85 were the guys.  If those are the top 3 defenders, who’s next?  Roquan and Fuller come to mind.  What about Floyd?  Dark horse candidate Callahan?  How many pro bowlers are on this defense?

There have been a lot of great players and defenses over the years on our Bears.  The real key to becoming legendary is winning.  This is the legacy of the 1985 Bears, our one and only Super Bowl winners.  Great individual players that came together to form the best defense of all time.  Maybe the comparisons are unfair, but more on the side of the 85 Bears.  The fun comparisons in our city go like this:  the 91 Bulls vs the 96 Bulls, or the 10 Hawks vs the 15 Hawks.  Heck I’ll even give you the 05 Sox vs the 16 Cubs; we all know there’s no comparison there, but you get my drift right?  We’re comparing champions to champions; that’s the way it should be.   Until we have another Super Bowl winner, there is no comparison to the 85 Bears; that’s why the legacy is still as strong as it is.  Although it will always be strong, wouldn’t it be nice to have another Super Bowl winner to compare them to?  That’s the real mission here.

I’m loving these Bears.  I’m loving this defense and all the guys on it.  I’m loving the 8-3 record and the fact that we’re in first place.  They’re already making memories for us.  Of course I want more.  I want it all.   I want another Super Bowl.  That’s not too much to ask right?  Make your own mark.  Bear Down!

Comparisons are inevitable. We are obviously biased to our teams and superstars. There is NO comparison to MJ, but I think that there is also no comparison to the 85 Bears. That team was full of superstars with the crazy coaches to go with them. They dominated like no other ever will. Yes, we tried to compare the 2006 Bears, but they came up short. We can try to compare this year’s Bears, but there is still a long way to go. Bottom line, without a Super Bowl, the comparisons stop dead in their tracks. Even with it, though, nothing will ever compare to the ’85 Bears. That legacy is cemented just like the 90s Bulls, Blackhawks of this decade, and the 2016 Cubs. There will never be another quite like them. Other teams may get close, and I am hoping that this Bears team shocks us all. How awesome would that be? I love watching this D play. I love watching MTru grow, thinking more and more he is finally the guy at qb. 8-3 is great, a division title will be sweet, but a Super Bowl is all that matters at the end of the day. 2 months left to show it and continue to prove it! BEAR DOWN!!!
