November 14, 2018: Leaders

Work has been a grind lately.  It was especially tough coming back to work on Monday after Sunday’s Bears game with my son… whew… that was a steep drop, let me tell you.  But… we push ahead.  My brain has pretty much been set on the Bears as far as when it comes to Chicago sports right now.  The Bulls and Blackhawks are both rough to watch right now; it’s time to Bear Down for as long as possible this football season.

Coming back to my desk after running around all morning, I had to catch up on my emails.  As I checked my phone before starting, I got an alert that Matt Nagy was going to talk with the media.  So, being in that frame of mind, I flipped it on.  I watched and listened to his entire press conference on Wednesday.  This guy is impressive.

I’ve been impressed with him since day 1.  I’m not watching every word he says or anything like that, but the things that I do read or hear, are all pretty positive.  He knows his stuff.  He’s confident in his program.  He’s all about the team.  He’s all about being positive.  What a difference a coach makes huh?  Long have we come since the days of sorry ass Trestman, or lie to your face Fox.  It’s refreshing as hell, let me tell you.  It’s not that we have to know all the Bears business, but there is something to be said for being transparent.  To me, it shows confidence.  It shows that you’re comfortable with what you’re doing.  It doesn’t guarantee results; nothing does as far as I know, and that’s OK.  It puts it out there.  You’re accountable for the good and bad times.  You own up to your mistakes.  You don’t try to get too high, you don’t try to get too low.  You’re always learning… trying to get better.  These are good life lessons too.

Following Nagy came Trubisky.  Again, I was impressed.  Lots of talk about Trubisky, both locally and nationally.  I like the kid.  I’ve admitted I was pissed as hell when we traded up a spot to draft him; I was eyeing Watson too (Who the heck really knew about Mahomes?)  I’ll gladly be wrong.  I don’t need to root against him to justify my initial anger at the situation.  I want to be wrong, and from what I could tell so far, I am.  Yes, don’t fit him for the HOF jacket quite yet, but come on, we’re seeing progress here.  We’re seeing a guy on the upswing; he’s learning, he’s getting better… and that’s talking Xs and Os.  Ultimately, that’s what’s most important, but… at the QB position it helps to have the intangibles, more specifically, leadership skills.  I don’t think there is any doubt that he possesses those.  Again, feels like decades removed from the sourpuss wet blanket known as Jay Cutler.  “But his arm strength”… yeah, how’d that work out for us?  You want to be critical… you want to cherry pick the guy you wish we had at QB… go for it; you’re an idiot.  We have someone in Trubisky who is getting it done right now; standings check please.  And with someone who has the intangibles, the sky is the limit; he has a long way to go to becoming the best QB that he can be.  We haven’t seen the best yet, but what we have seen… is not too shabby.

I’m happy with this Nagy Trubisky combo.  We have leaders in the two positions that most require it.  This type of attitude is infectious… everybody appears to be on the same page on this team.  And yes, there isn’t a stat for chemistry, but if there was one, the Bears would be killing it.  And when it comes down to it, when you’re able to look at the guy next to you, and trust them… and believe in the coach and QB… yeah, that might equal some wins too; that might equal the biggest of wins one day.  We’ve only just begun… Bear Down!

I wasn’t too sure about Nagy when the Bears hired him. Maybe it was because he had just called a bad game for the chiefs in the playoffs and lost. Maybe it was because he had never been a head coach before. Whatever the reasons were, he definitely seems like the right guy now. He seems to have everything in order and is not afraid to challenge his team. Yes, they are young, but that does not mean it is too soon for them to win. MTru sure seems to have taken solidly to Nagy, too, which is super important. Both of these guys are leading the Bears differently but in the same direction. While I’m at it, let’s throw Vic Fangio in there to complete the trifecta. Pace and Nagy made the right decision keeping this guy. He has this D playing at a high level now that it has talent all over. With a young team and these 3 guys leading it, I feel confident that the best is yet to come for the Bears!
    BEAR DOWN!!!
