October 15, 2018: Working Overtime

If you love the Blackhawks, and you love extra hockey, then you are really loving the start of this season.  The Blackhawks are the first team in NHL history to open the season with 5 straight OT games.  Strange enough, there have been zero shootouts though; that’s weird.

Because the Hawks have been exclusively working overtime, they have no losses in regulation; getting at least a point in each of their games so far has been nice.  At 3-0-2, they sit in 2nd place in the division with 8 points.  Lots of stuff to like about the Hawks thus far.

They have the most goals in the Western Conference thus far this season.  22 goals!  Toews and Kane have been hot.  The other guy who has been finding the back of the net is Debrincat.  He has a ton of skill, and a quick release that should help him continue to be one of the top goal scorers for the Hawks.  With these 3 guys leading the charge, I like our chances.  Of course you would love for other guys to step up too; it’s not all good news…

Brandon Saad where are you?  He’s had some tough luck; had a couple chances the other day that he could not convert.  He was dropped down to the 4th line, and now, may be a healthy scratch for the first time in his career?  WOW!  When the Blackhawks got him back for Bread Man, I was OK with the trade.  Yes, I loved Bread Man, but come on… It’s the Saad-Father… he was no slouch.  He had a bad year last year, like most of the Hawks; I chalked it up.  I just knew he’d be back this year.  So far, so bad.  Maybe this is what he needs… I still feel like he’ll be a major contributor this year; if he’s not…

The other bad news are the goals allowed.  Yes, not only do we lead the Western Conference in most goals scored with 22, we lead the conference with most goals allowed with 21; this does not bode well long term.  That’s where Crow comes in.  He’s supposed to return this week, although I haven’t seen any firm confirmation of that.  Not surprising though, considering how long and strange this whole journey has been with him.  I’m afraid without a healthy Crow, this cannot last.

Another bright spot in this young season is the play of young defenseman Henri Jokiharju; yes I had to check for the spelling of his last name.  He’s played pretty well so far, which is great.  It’s great because he’s 18 years old.  We haven’t had a great young defenseman since Hammer?  Leddy?  Both are gone, so that sucks.  But this kid… can the torch finally officially be passed from Keith and Seabs to Henri?  Pretty cool Keith making his 1000th game the other day too; Blackhawk for life… Hall of Famer eventually.  But it’s refreshing to finally see somebody on defense who could be a mainstay; now let’s just hope the Hawks keep him.  Because regardless if it’s Crow or Ward, we’re going to need to be more solid around the net defensively.

Let’s keep this up boys.  Only thing that sucks with the hot start is that I may not be able to score any cheap tickets.  I don’t mind watching on TV.  Go Hawks!

Pretty crazy, 5 games and all of them to OT. Most goals scored and given up in the conference so far. The offense, mainly Toews and Kane, has started hot. Meanwhile, the D and goalie are giving up way too much. A healthy Crow would definitely help solve that problem, but when is he returning? Supposedly this week but who knows. Saad has been a big disappointment since returning last year. He needs something to wake his ass up. Next game Thursday night. Will it be another OT contest? Can the Hawks stay undefeated in regulation? Stay tuned!
    GO HAWKS!!!
