October 3, 2018: Stunned

I’m like an open wound, just cut, raw, vulnerable.  It hurts.  It’s going to take a little time to heal.  This wasn’t supposed to be the way this 2018 Cubs season ended.  Making the playoffs 4 years in a row all of a sudden doesn’t feel so good.  A wild card game loss, and just like that, it’s become Bears season.  Too soon… way too soon.

Where to begin…  So many things are running through my head.  There are plenty of things to talk about here, and unfortunately, we’ll have almost a full off-season to discuss.  I don’t want to make excuses, but what went wrong here?  I think everything just caught up with us; it became too much to overcome.

It starts with the offseason pitching acquisitions.  Darvish, Chatwood, and Morrow were nowhere to be seen.  If we had these guys, even just for a little bit more than we did (OK, Chatwood for a little less than we did), that could have equated to one more win, right?  One more win gets us the division, and avoids this bullshit wild card game where anything can and did go wrong.  13 innings… just like the available players on our roster for this game, the Cubs were maxed out.

Yes, Hamels and Chavez were absolutely great mid-season acquisitions; Murphy was solid too… for a while.  Where the hell was playoff Murphy when we needed him?  Kintzler wasn’t worth much.  I guess the next biggest thing I look at is the Kris Bryant injury.  I talked about how a 70% KB is better than 100% of a lot of other players; that 70%, if it was even that high, wasn’t enough.  Obviously he was nowhere near the guy we know.

There were nice stories, like Bote, but others not so nice, like Russell.  Zobrist had a really good year, but probably played way more than Joe wanted him to.  Heyward had a better year than the last two, but that’s not saying much.  Almora took strides, Schwarber was better.  Baez was awesome this year, but seemed to run out of gas down the stretch.  Rizzo started slow, but finished strong.  What the hell happened to Contreras this year?

The starters were great down the stretch; they kept us at the top of the division.  Lester, Hamels, Hendricks, Quintana, and even Montgomery were key; three of them pitched in this wild card game.  I’ll tell you what; I wouldn’t have wanted anybody else out there but Hendricks in the extra innings in this game.  He has been our best pitcher down the stretch; we lost with our best pitcher on the mound.  Somehow I feel better because we lost with our best on the mound.  I’m really trying here…

I’m stunned.  Like Baez, the Cubs as a team ran out of gas.  The 30 for 30, hard to overlook the impact that had, but no excuses, right?  This team was supposed to be built to withstand anything; we’ll have to reassess that.  We can blame injuries, Theo, Joe, whoever you want to, but at the end of the day, the players on the field didn’t get it done.  For whatever reason, we couldn’t hit; we saw plenty of that during the year, so it shouldn’t have been that shocking.  Still, I’m stunned.  There is no way the Cubs wouldn’t break out of this in time to make some serious noise in the playoffs.  There is no way… there is…

I refused to believe that the Cubs could not overcome all of this.  I wouldn’t believe it, I wouldn’t stop believing until it actually happened.  It happened.  It really f-ing happened.

The recovery process, the healing process will start… soon.  Not now, not yet.  I’m still hoping to wake up; yet, I can’t go to sleep.

Stunned is right! This is what happens when you open yourself up to single games to decide your future. A week later and still can’t believe the Cubs are out. Hard to believe how so much talent on offense can all go so quiet at the same time for so many games…makes no sense. 2 runs in the 2 biggest games of the year will not and did not get it done. Yes, the Cubs got little to nothing out of the 3 big name pitching free agents, but pitching was not the issue. Once again, the hitting failed the Cubs. They made the move of bringing in chili davis as a new hitting coach and not sure that worked out. 40+ games of 1 run or less is unacceptable. How much falls back on him compared to the players? Theo and Joe made moves to put this team in position. The Cubs were there, but ultimately, the players did not do their jobs. They did not hit. Another long offseason to wonder what needs to be changed to get this Cubs team back to 2016. Too early for that now, but I am sure more to come. Wait until next year is here again, and I sure will be waiting to see what is done to retool the Cubs. GO CUBS GO!!!
