September 22, 2018: Fly The L

“How about those Cubs?” is what I heard a couple weeks back from a notorious Sox fan/Cubs hater at my job when the Brewers closed in on first place.  I was edgy; I let it get to me a bit.  So I said, “How’s Kopech?” as I raised my right arm in the air.  This was just a normal discussion for us.  Every time we pass each other in the building, the shit talking is on; that’s that Cubs Sox shit.  It’s nothing new to me.

Leading up to this weekend’s series, I heard some rumblings from Sox fans… hoping to make their season by throwing a wrench into ours.  One of the headlines in the paper earlier this week was something like “Rodon to be saved for Cubs series”.  Like we’re supposed to be scared about that?  I know the guy has been good, but… Scherzer, Strasburg, Nola, deGrom, Thor… and we’re supposed to be worried about Carlos Rodon?  Shaking in my boots man…

The Sox won game 1 on Friday; we threw them a bone.  But I had a couple people come up to me this morning, as I had my Cubs shirt on, asking me about the loss from Friday afternoon.  I told them “yeah, the Cubs do that once in a while… they’ll get back to business tonight”.  And they did… they needed to, with the Brewers again closing to 1.5 games.  Needed that W; we got that plus a Brewers loss.  Lead 2.5, magic number 6… yes sir!

I never understood why so many Sox fans hate the Cubs so much.  It has to be because the Cubs get all the attention.  I never hated the Sox growing up; I try not to hate them today.  That’s not how I’m going to teach my son.  Yeah, he knows all about the Packers, but the Sox… they are our 2nd ranked baseball team.  We like to rank each of our top teams.  Now the Cubs are the one and only on my list, but I rank them anyways.  And who to rank 2nd on this list but the “other” Chicago team?  Makes sense to me.  If my son wanted a Sox shirt, I’d get it for him… maybe.  But if I ever did, he would never wear it during the cross town series.  When the Sox play the Cubs, I hate them just like every other team the Cubs play.

And yes, I know how to be petty.  I root for teams to lose, no doubt.  How do you think I get through each NFL playoff season?  Rooting for certain teams to lose has been a tradition since the Bears have decided to not participate.  I get it.  But it just pisses me off… all these Sox fans rooting against the Cubs… they would much rather join hands with Brewers fans, and “fly the L” when the Cubs lose.  Have you seen those big “L” flags?  I know I can be a hater, but that’s another level.  You’re going to go out and buy a flag that represents another team’s loss?  You’re sad and pathetic.

But unfortunately, I know a lot of Sox fans like that, including this guy that I run into at the job.  Pure, unadulterated hatred for the Cubs.  But two can play at that game.  I don’t like to dip down to another person’s level, but for the Cubs Sox games, I will… I enjoy splashing around in the mud down there during these series.  Fact is the lines that Sox fans use the most against Cubs fans cannot be used against me; I know my shit.  And oh yeah, I know more about your own damn team than you do, so don’t try it… don’t try sticking your head out now that the Sox beat the Cubs one game… breaking out that Sox hat or shirt when you haven’t watched 5 games all year.  Only one more Sox game for me to watch this year… Send the Sox and Hawk out with a spanking that will remind them who their daddy is.  Go Cubs!
