September 12, 2018: Stepping Up

Well, that was a much needed win.  There are many big wins during the season; wins that feel bigger than just a normal win in the 162 game grind.  Wins to stop a losing streak and big comeback wins fall in that category.  This one was big because if we didn’t win this game, the Brewers would have tied us for first place, but you already knew that.

Quintana against the Brewers was just what the doctor ordered.  Actually, how much faith do you have in Q?  It seems like there aren’t a bunch of big Q fans.  Everybody regretting that we traded Jimenez, who hasn’t got one major league hit yet, for this left handed pitcher that we can have in the middle of our starting rotation through 2020 at a decent cost.  I’m sorry, it’s kind of like Gleyber…. well, almost.  Q wasn’t part of that World Series team in 2016, but he’ll be part of the next one.  And when that happens, I don’t care if Eloy goes on to win the triple crown, if the guy we got in return for him helped us win a World Series, it’s worth it!

Yeah, he stepped up big time.  He was zoned in for this one; loved to see it.  These are the type of pitching performances we need down the stretch, and of course in the postseason; yeah, I’m talking about the postseason again.  You know I don’t like that playoff possibility percentage, but I’ve believed since day 1 the Cubs would be playing in the 2nd season.  Yes, I was a bit edgy, and with 1 more against Milwaukee, still am.. but it’s a confident edgy.  I’d much rather win the division than the wild card, although I’d much rather get the wild card than the couch come October.

Anyways, Q came through, bravo!  And what about Justin Wilson?  I’m sure if I dig through my archives, I ripped this guy over time.  He was horrible last year, there’s no way around that.  He’s been good this year, and is seemingly getting better.  He walked in with the bases loaded and didn’t F around.  That’s how our guys out of the bullpen need to be.  Come in, and fire strikes.  Good morning, good afternoon, and good night; that’s exactly how we draw it up.  And then De La Rosa?  Yeah, Maddon went to him to face the best Brewers hitters in the 8th… and he came through.  Does he have one foot in the circle of trust?  Stroppy came in, and shut the door… thanks to 2 great plays by Addy.  Joe used him exactly how he should use him… a late inning defensive replacement, because he’s still been solid there for the most part.  The 2nd out was an absolutely fantastic play.

Big time win boys.  I went to bed with a smile on my face.  Next up on the mound is Hendricks, who has been much better the 2nd half of the season than the first.  He looks like he’s rounding into big game Kyle form; we need one on Wednesday night in Wrigley.

Yep, all our boys need to be stepping up; I believe they can.  Now they just need to go out and do it.  A 3 game lead makes me feel much better than a 1 game lead.  Go Cubs!
