September 10, 2018: One Game Lead

As if the Bears loss wasn’t bad enough…  the Brewers come into Wrigley and beat the Cubs on Monday night to pull within 1 game.  Are we worried about the Brewers yet?  I’m more worried about the Cubs.  What seems like a stacked lineup at times, seems the total opposite sometimes.  Let’s take a look.

Let’s start with the easy guys, Javier Baez and Anthony Rizzo.  Here are the two most consistent guys we’ve had all year.  If they’re not hitting, we’re not doing anything pretty much.  The next guy that would be in that group is Kris Bryant.  He missed a lot of time with his shoulder injury, and now has come back not quite himself yet.  My biggest worry is that he will not be himself the rest of this year… that it will take the offseason to get back to 100%.  Then I think, KB at 80% is better than most guys at 100%.  Then I think, well who after KB can we count on in the lineup?

Ben Zobrist has been pretty steady.  He needs to be in the lineup almost every day at this point.  There is no more messing around with the lineups Joe.  We need to win, and we need to win now.  We should put our best 8 guys on the field right now.  Zobrist is part of that.  And although the new car smell has worn off Daniel Murphy, he needs to be in there too.  His defense is a bit scary though, but we need good ABs up and down the lineup.  And Kyle Schwarber… yes, I think he’s part of this lineup too.  That brings us to 6.

What other choice do we have at catcher than Willson Contreras?  He has been dreadful at the plate this year… this after having an MVP season last year up until he got hurt.  Definitely thought he’d come back to himself; haven’t seen that yet.  What’s worse, is that his defense seems to be struggling because of it.  He still has the powerful arm, but his pitch framing and catching period… too many pass balls… isn’t helping the cause.  His base running has been atrocious too.  Still, not going to take Caratini over him…  maybe move Schwarby to catcher?  Well, not if his back is bothering him…  We really need Willson to step up right now.

I guess I need to be clear on where each of these guys is playing right now.  Obviously Willson at catcher.  Rizzo at 1B, Bryant at 3B, Baez at SS, Murphy at 2B.  Zobrist and Schwarby in the OF; so we need one more OF.  I wish Heyward were healthy; can’t believe I’m saying that, but he was very good this year before going down.  He would be in that last spot, which would be CF… until then…

Almora hasn’t been cutting it.  I was in love with him earlier in the year, but he’s been in the tank too.  Don’t even mention Russell to me; he should be strictly a defensive replacement at this point.  Bote has had glorious moments this year, but is he an everyday player?  Or is he the 2nd half of a potent pinch hitting duo with LaStella.  Don’t think we can put KB in CF to be able to insert Bote in the lineup, because that would be my choice.

Maybe I’m just really frustrated right now.  Maybe I need to take a breath.  Maybe this is the last slump for the Cubs for the year, and they’ll kick ass from here on out, win the Brewer series, and win the division.  That would be nice.  That’s what we need to happen.  This one game lead has me feeling a bit edgy…  Go Cubs!
