September 9, 2018: The Last Time

Look, it’s one game… yes, it was a tough loss, but there have been worse.  Yes, I am upset too, but… not that much surprisingly.  To me, the way I think about the Bears blowing another game to the Packers, is that this is the last time.  Come with me…

The Bears played their best half of football in a long time in this game; let’s just start there.  If you’re not excited about what we saw from Khalil Mack, I don’t know what to tell you.  The guy played amazing in his first football action of the year; remember that OK?  Oh yeah, and then the kid Roquan comes in and promptly gets a sack on his first play; our first round draft pick from this year, OK?  Our guys were tackling in space too; they were on top of guys and tackled them as soon as they got the opportunity.  Remember, this is the first half I’m talking about, but still… there were very positive signs from the defense.  The offense too…

Maybe the Bears just looked good out of the gate on offense because of the element of surprise, or maybe because most of those plays were scripted, but… similar as with the defense, I was excited as hell from what I saw out of the offense in the first half.  Sure, Mitch missed a throw or two, but let’s not forget that this is a guy starting his first full season… in his 2nd season in the league… oh yeah, and running a new offense, and oh yeah, being coached by a guy who was coaching in his first NFL game.  To see all these great signs in the first half of football for these Bears should NOT be forgotten.

But maybe you’re doom and gloom already… maybe you are falling into that rut of “here we go” again.  I have to firmly disagree with you here.  This loss, although it was like many losses in recent Bears history, and although it was to the Packers who have dealt us many tough losses over the years, and although it was in week 1 of the NFL season on national TV so everybody can overreact to what they are seeing because they hadn’t seen football in so long and because that’s what everybody does over one game anyways, was different.  Yes, it was different.

I’m going to throw a comparison out there.  Remember the Cubs losing in the playoffs against the Mets in 2015?  Some thought, here we go again… same old choking Cubs… they’ll never win it all; I thought, this loss was different… this loss is only the beginning…. we’ll be back.   I feel that same way about this Bears loss.  I just do.  Call me crazy.

I believe the Bears are going to be good this year; I haven’t stopped believing that after one loss.  It was a tough loss, yes it was, but… it’s game 1 of the Nagy era.  He can’t lose any games tougher than this one, unless we go to the playoffs, which would be a great accomplishment for this season, which is something I still believe can happen.

Now I’m not saying I don’t have any negative, ugly feelings about this loss… that’s the reason I turned off the TV immediately after the 4th down fumble; I wanted to stay away from Twitter too… I didn’t want to say anything I regretted.  So I slept on it.. and you know what?  It’s not as bad as I thought.  I feel pissed, but not defeated.  The key is what’s next.

This one game will not define this Bears team, unless they let it.  And if you believed everything about the Bears leading up to this game and subsequent tough loss, and you stop believing that now, because of one tough loss, you’re not a true fan.  You can be down in the dumps or pissed as hell, but trust me when I say this; we’ve only just begun.  I hope every single Bears coach and player learned something from this one; I hope they remember how this feels, do everything they can to not let this happen again, and forget it all that quickly.  Time to turn our attention to week 2.  Bear Down!
