What’s on your bucket list? Do you have one? If not, you need to make one. Then you need to start checking them off. It doesn’t matter how many items are on your list. It doesn’t matter how quickly you can check these items off. What’s most important is that you have a list of things you want to do or see before you die. And since we never know when we’re going to die, get cracking!
I checked a big one off my list a couple years back; I’m sure I wasn’t alone with that one. Seeing the Cubs win the World Series was other worldly. They were the last of my teams to win it all in my lifetime. It was unforgettable; something like that continues to carry through to this day. I have other things, like seeing every ballpark and visiting many places throughout the world. But this weekend wasn’t about me.
My wife is a big concert person. She’s been to many of them, starting when she was 7 years old. It is definitely one of her things. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to see her favorite band in concert. If Jim Morrison was with us longer, maybe she would have seen The Doors. She lost another bucket list item recently too, when George Michael died. So when this band was coming back to the United States after a 13 year hiatus, it was a must to see them.
Their first concert date was earlier this year in San Francisco. Timing wasn’t the best, plus we were hoping they’d come to Chicago. When the next date was announced in New York City, I didn’t want to wait. We bought the tickets and booked our trip. We were going to see Jamiroquai at Forest Hills in NYC on September 8th. My wife was over the top excited.
Yet, that meant leaving her boy for the first time. This would be the first time she would not be in Chicago with my son overnight; he’s had sleep overs, but she has still been here. I’ve been gone for nights before, but never her. It was a big deal. I had been trying to get her to do a weekend trip for a while; this bucket list item helped force the issue.

So it was off to NYC… Great F-ing city. Now I love, love my hometown of Chicago, but if there was another place I would love to live, it would be New York. We stood in Queens, so we got to see a whole ‘nother part of New York we had never experienced. We stood in Flushing, close to Mets Stadium and also where Serena was playing in the US Open women’s final. We were in Chinatown; we hit the streets as soon as we got there, walking amongst the thousands of other people up and down Main St. Empanadas from a food truck, little shopping at Modell’s, and a mani-pedi before grabbing a hot tea with cream cheese foam (pretty good) and heading back to the hotel. We had a little chance to rest before heading out.
We would take the subway there. That is always an experience in itself; this time would be no different. The 7 to the E, F, or R to get there. On the train, we had a violinist, who started playing the Godfather theme. I missed recording it the first time he was down at the other end of the cart, but as he walked by, I asked him “one more time”? He said, “one more time”?, and started playing it again right in front of us. Pretty cool for any fan of the Godfather, which we definitely are. Only in New York, I swear.
The concert was unbelievable. My wife, a concert connoisseur, said it was the best one she had ever been to in her life. I had to agree, but it meant so much more coming from her. This is HER thing; I thanked her for that. This is one of those things that I probably would have never experienced had I not married her. It was such an awesome time; I need a whole separate blog to really do this justice.
But we’ll end it here… we’ll watch our videos over and over… we’ll watch it on YouTube, I’d recommend the same. Yet, it was one of those things where you had to be there to really understand how amazing it was. The best part though… was seeing how happy my wife was, and proving to ourselves, that through marriage, family, and a home, that we can still do it. One of the best times ever…
