September 7, 2018: Week 1 Preview- Bears at Packers

posted in: Bears | 0

It all started when my son was like 3 years old.  We were in Bed Bath and Beyond…yeah, we’d go there often, great coupons.  Anyways, they had a little section of NFL mugs.  I couldn’t help but take this opportunity to  properly introduce my son to the Packers.  I pointed the big G symbol out.  I told him, “do you know what the G stands for?”   He didn’t, so I told him.  Garbage.  Now, 3 years later, he points out to me any time he sees someone wearing Packers gear.  I just chuckle.  When he points that out, I just tell him “nobody is perfect” and he reminds me of that day 3 years ago:  Packers are garbage Dad.  I nod.  My son gives the thumbs down every time we pass Subway because of the horrible green and yellow color combination that they have.  He debated this in kindergarten with a kid who was a Packer fan.  What have I done?

Now here we sit, on the brink of the 2018 Bears season.  They open up with none other than those cheeseturds, on national TV Sunday night; we all know how well those typically go.  But this year will be different.  This is the year we finally start to turn those tables, right?

Papa Vegas doesn’t think so.  Packers 7.5 point favorite in this one, but that shouldn’t surprise anyone.  Just like when you hear every national voice, or when you read any national publication, nobody is picking the Bears to do crap.  Only with the recent Mack addition did we even hit the radar.  We know better than those national heads.  How is some national guy who isn’t around going to know our team better than we do?  We’ve got some good local coverage of the Bears, and most of them are excited too.  Only thing is, when it comes to their playoff predictions, nobody is taking them.  Why not?  Don’t you believe that stuff you’re saying?  I do.

We’re all well aware of how shitty we’ve been in recent history.   Every year I have high hopes; there’s been a lot of disappointment.  What’s different this time?  Well, how was that offseason?  We are very in tune with what could possibly be the best offseason in Bears history these past months.  It doesn’t mean squat in the standings, but we see, we feel the difference.  Coach Nagy is different, the good kind.  He brings an attitude, a mentality that we’ve been lacking.  He also brings a cutting edge offense; don’t think we’ve ever said that about a Bears team.  He’s kept guys in place (Fangio) and has added great talent around himself on the coaching staff.  The talent upgrade on the field is huge…on paper.  I’m ready to see it on the field.  I’m ready for the Bears to reward us for years of suck.  I’m ready for the Bears to finally live up to my high expectations.  Can they do it?

Why not?  Give me one damn reason why this isn’t possible?  Aaron Rodgers?  Recent suckage against the Packers?  Ok, valid points, but I wouldn’t be that surprised if the score ends up close to this.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the Bears not only cover that spread, but win outright.  This is the start of a new era.

The only thing I’m a bit upset about is the timing of this game.  Being back in school, my son will probably only see part of the first quarter…maybe all of it depending on how it’s going.  He knows who is playing.  He’s got his Trubisky jersey ready.  He’s been alive for 2 Cups.  All he knows is the golden era of Cubs baseball.  Now, it’s time to build some good Bear memories.  Bear down!!!
