Whew. Wasn’t worried going into the Milwaukee series up 5 games, but after losing the first two, we were on the brink of getting swept, which would have shrunk our lead to 2 games. I was still confident, but that 9th inning sure was shaky.
Pedro Strop. I’ve written about him here before. Never trusted him, until recently. Seeing his numbers which prove him to be one of the most reliable Cubs relievers of all time, I opened up the circle. I’m with you now Pedro. Yet, as I began to trust him, it didn’t seem like Joe agreed.
Trying to think of the game…it was at Wrigley, and the first two guys got on. I know we had a 3 run lead, and Pedro had recently given up a homer that tied the game against the Reds. Anyways, Joe pulled him. Pedro looked shocked. I was shocked. Is this guy still not in Joe’s circle of trust???
Well, that was sure tested on Wednesday night in Milwaukee. Edwards was up in the pen. Joe was ready. After walking the first guy, and allowing a single to Yelich, he faced the third straight pinch hitter. Pretty good strategy for the Brewers that it worked out that way, but knowing Counsell, it was probably pure luck. Anyways, Thames flew to center, 1 out.
Next up was Cain. I saw a video about 30 minutes earlier of him not running out a double play earlier in the game. He promptly hit a grounder to third. He ran this one out, and beat the throw. I have to say, that glove tap by KB was the difference. Can’t do that Kris. So the Brewers had one last chance.

It was none other than Curtis Granderson who had homered earlier. Chicago guy too. Pedro struck him out and the Cubs won. Pedro did it. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Like I’ve said, not scared of the Brewers; they’ve done nothing to make me feel that way. But, but, I was sweating a bit in this one. Milwaukee has had some mojo working for them this year; I thought it might bite us. I’m glad it didn’t. 4 games is a lot better than 2.
Getting one in this series was the bare minimum. The Brewers needed the sweep. By winning the series, they’ve kept the wild card lead, but we continue to lead the division. We’ll face them again starting on Monday for three games, this time in Wrigley. Same thing goes for that series, although it would be nice to win the series. We’ve held them and the Cardinals at arm’s length, but never really extended that arm further. Would love to see it. I need to save my heart for October.
Next up, the Washington Nationals for 4 games. They’re on the outside looking in, but at the very least, would love to put a wrench in our season. That target remains squarely on our back, but we’re used to it. Bring it on. Go Cubs!!

Pedro Strop? Pedro Fn Strop? Wow, how times have changed! This guy was first man out on our trade block last year. Now, he is the anchor of the Cubs bullpen. Go figure. He has definitely earned his invitation into the circle of trust. He has been great! The brewcrew have had a great season, but let’s keep them below us. Would much rather win the division and get a full series than having a 1 game wild card playoff game. Just keep winning series, Cubbies! The target is, has been, and is not going anywhere for the Cubs. Everybody wants a piece. Bring it!
GO CUBS GO!!!
