Thursday night brought us a Chicago triple play for the first time in a long time. The Bears, Cubs, and Sox were all on for our viewing pleasure. It was good entertainment on fantasy football draft night.
OK, I’m going to be honest. I didn’t tune in for one minute of the Bears game. I just don’t care about preseason. Counting down the days until next Sunday night vs Green Bay, but until then… nobody get hurt. I wanted to actually take my son to his first Bears game this year; I wanted to do a preseason game. But, it didn’t work out. Last week was a wedding, and tonight was a week night, and with him back in school, that wasn’t going to happen. Maybe a regular season game???
The truth is, I was locked onto the Cubs the whole time. That was a good game vs the Braves. An early 3-0 lead felt pretty comfortable, until Monty gave up a 4 spot. The Braves lead was short lived, as 3am came through. Yes, we had a Tommy LaStella sighting. I was thinking lately with how bad he’s been struggling if his playoff spot would be in jeopardy. Well, I bet this one felt really good. He turned on that ball and parked it in the right field bleachers, giving the Cubs a 5-4 lead. And that’s how it ended.

Kintzler got the win, and Chavez, Wilson, Edwards, and Strop shut the door. A really nice play by Almora helped maintain the lead, and then it was all Baez in the 9th. A soft hit that looked targeted for left field as Baez started that direction; that one turned out to be an easy play, as was the pop up to end it. But the one in the middle was the impressive one. A flare into center field was snagged by Javy. Almora was so deep, he had no chance. Baez saw that, and raced out and snagged it. One of the most impressive things about Baez is his instincts. He has such a high baseball IQ; he’s able to make split second decisions out there, that most of the time, turn out very good. Yes, his aggressiveness on the basepaths sometimes leads to outs, but on the field, wherever you put him, he’s zoned in… just awesome. Big win for the Cubbies considering the Cards and Brewers both won. Still up 4.5 and 5 heading to Philly for 3.
Finally, the Sox… towards the end of the Cubs game, I heard Giolito was pitching well, and the Sox were up 4-0. When the Cubs game ended, I actually turned on MLB network, and watched a couple innings of Padres Rockies. Then I said, screw it, let me check on the Sox. When I tuned in, it was the top of the 9th. Yeah, not such a good inning for the White Sox. Man the Red Sox are loaded… But you know what, I was still glad I tuned in. Benetti and Stone are really good… I love me some Len and JD, but these guys are very good too. As the Sox continue to get better, maybe they can catch up to Jason and Steve. When they started talking about Naked Gun… yep, nice job guys; I had read that same article earlier in the week. Love that flick.
The Chicago sports version of the triple play was complete; we’ll have a few more of those in September… With the Cubs focused on the playoffs, I think the split may be similar, although Bears regular season games are must see TV too. Got that remote control hand ready…

I actually saw none of the 3 games going on. I would not have watched the preseason Bears or the white sox. I would have watched the Cubs but was so zoned into the draft, I forgot about it…hahaha. Glad the Cubs held on and got the 5-4 W. Will Tommy make the playoff roster? A good, disciplined left handed bat is hard to find, but he has been struggling, and with the emergence of Bote, who knows. Trust in Joe to make the right decision when it’s time. Same goes for the bullpen of trust. Who will get the nod and who will play cheerleader? All important decisions to come. Counting down to Sunday night, week 1, for the Bears! Also getting ready for a Chicago Cubs magic number! BEAR DOWN and GO CUBS GO!!!
