August 27, 2018: The Co-MVPs

posted in: Cubs | 0

Remember the 2016 NLCS?  Of course you do.  Back in that series, we were being lead by two guys, the Co-MVPs of that series.  It’s those same two guys who have been leading us this year.  Javy Baez and Jon Lester could share that team honor for the 2018 season.

Baez with a couple more hits in this one, inches closer to 300.   300?!?!   Yes, the guy who was striking out at an alarming rate that first year, is almost at 300.  Yeah, he’s got 28 dingers and 97 ribbies too.  The dude has carried us at times.  He still pisses me off at times, like the lazy play in the 9th inning of the Hamels complete game or getting picked off in the first inning of tonight’s game.  But his defensive gems far exceed any bad plays and his aggressiveness on the basepaths leads to way more good outcomes than the contrary.  I’m not going to be too picky.  The guy is a legit MVP candidate.

And what about Lester?  14-5 this year.  He’s been the most consistent pitcher all year.  He wasn’t at his best tonight, but he fought all the way, and left the game with a quality start and a chance to win.  Oh yeah, he also drove in 2 runs, he picked off a guy, and he caught a line drive right back at him.  He has his days too, where he gets rocked, but those times are few and far between in the big scheme of things.  We’re looking at our Game 1 starter period.

With all this being said, we got a couple other guys working on co-MVPs of the second half.  What about our two in season acquisitions?  Cole Hamels and Daniel Murphy have been phenomenal.  Ok, maybe a bit premature for both, especially Murphy, but both of them really couldn’t be doing much better since they’ve arrived.  Hamels has moved up to Game 2 starter, worst case Game 3 pending matchups, while Murphy is set at the top of the lineup.  I know Joe is Joe, but I don’t think we’ll see too much tinkering with the lineup.  Murphy, Baez, Rizzo (how hot has he been?) and Bryant (played in Iowa today) when he returns is a pretty formidable top 4.  Put whoever is hottest out of everybody else behind Kris, maybe Schwarby, and look to pounce early.  It’s bad enough that we pulverize bullpens on our way to the most comeback victories in the majors, but to start off a game, you’re looking at those 4 guys?  Damn!

So yeah, the Cubs won their 6th in a row tonight.  I know, it’s the Tigers, Reds, and Mets, but what are we supposed to do?  Right, beat the crap out of them.  6-1 in the first 7 of 23 in 23, 4.5 and 5 games up on 2 and 3, and 32 to go on our way to 4 straight and 2 in 3, are all numbers you should be familiar with.  Ride that wave baby!  Go Cubs!

Baez and Lester would definitely be the co-MVPs this year for the Cubs. Baez is having an unreal season and should be a legitimate MVP contender. Lester is doing what he does…win games for the Cubs. Yes, at times he gets rocked, but he always seems to grind out there, even without his best stuff. He will be the game 1 starter without a doubt. Hamels and Murphy have been great pickups thus far for the Cubs…thanks Theo! If they can continue that for the rest of the year, watch out! KB coming back soon. Joe will have to nail down a lineup to close out the year before heading to the postseason. I trust Joe, too. Riding the up wave right now! GO CUBS GO!!!
