I was lucky enough to NOT watch most of the Cubs games on Saturday and Sunday. While it was fortunate to win the first 2 games scoring only 1 run, I didn’t think we were going to keep up that trend. But, yes, these 4 games in Pittsburgh were a series of ones. One run per game is not going to get it done most nights.
Another solo home run that! Zorilla was the culprit this time in the 3rd game of the series… that’s it though… that’s it!?!?! You knew we would need more runs in this one with Chatwood taking the mound. We all hoped we had seen the last of Chatwood as a starting pitcher in a Cubs uniform, but no, due to Montgomery being put on the DL/getting married, he was back. He lasted 2 full innings; thanks for coming out Chatty. Yet, he had only given up 3 runs, plus, even though he’s been very bad, the Cubs still had a good record in the games he’s pitched… so…. add that with the Cubs comeback prowess, and yeah, we were going to be just fine in this one. Not today though, not today. The only silver lining in this whole thing was that the pitcher for the Pirates was on my fantasy team; I would have much rather seen him get rocked though…
The final game of the series looked like it was going to end the same way as the first two… for a minute. Schwarby with a solo home run gave us the early lead… another 1-0 win on a solo home run? Quintana was pretty solid. He was responsible for giving up the game tying run, but come on… 1 run given up by our starter? I’ll take that all day long. We did have our chances to win the game…

Had to head to church around 4pm on Sunday. It was a welcome back to school mass and BBQ; my son’s first day will be Tuesday. As I was just getting to church, I got a text from my brother… U f-in serious??? I knew something was wrong. The last thing I heard was the Russell double. Turns out, the text was related to him getting picked off of 3rd base… I would have felt the same way. I heard the highlights later in the day, but never saw it… didn’t care to, but my frustration with Addison this year is at an all time high. It’s time to platoon him Joe. He’s become the new Heyward… only good for defense. Heyward is NOT the old Heyward; he’s actually having a great year. But Russell… defensive substitution late in the game, and a couple starts here and there… the same thing we did with Jason… just don’t wait too long Joe.
The Cards and Brewers traded blows in their series, and now at the end of Sunday, the Cubs sit 3.5 over the Brewers, and 4 over the Cardinals. Still waiting for an extension of this lead… but I think we need to start averaging more than 1 run per game. Time for Bryant to come back? Go Cubs!

1 run a game for 4 straight? Come on Cubbies. That is not going to get it done. The Cubs were fortunate enough to escape with 2 Ws out of those 4 games. The offense has be to better. KB coming back should definitely help. Do the Cubs need something else? A few games lead in the NL central is great, but it can and should be more. The Cubs need to finish August strong and head into the stretch run in September ready to close things out and get ready for postseason baseball again. The offense needs to snap out of it. Russell is definitely not alone there, but he does not seem to have his head straight. He was a big time performer for the Cubs in 2016, especially in the playoffs. Maybe he will wake up by then. Maybe he will be benched by then. TBD for him and the Cubs offense. GO CUBS GO!!!
