I talked a little bit about the intertwining of family and sports when I talked about the Bulls and the care package that my aunt brought me from Colorado. No VCR yet; still need to set that up. Let’s jump around a bit. It wasn’t only family, but I stayed into sports myself and watching Chicago sports with a little help from my friends.
I don’t have that many friends. I have a couple that I’ve known since kindergarten; another I met later in grade school. They are the oldest friends that I have. Then there’s another that I met when I was a sophomore in high school; he’s the one I consider my closest through all the years, although each one of them, whenever I see or talk to them, it’s like we’ve still been talking every day.
These people know you for you. They know you before we became who we are today… before the wife, the kid, the job. Those guys that know the type of person you are, and no matter how much you change, know the ways in which you won’t ever change.
So the one that I consider my closest today has a birthday today, so let’s go there. Basketball was our sport. It started way back in high school… it started in the alley behind his house. Many battles out there, dealing with the cracks in the pavement and the wind on any given day. We did play on regular courts too. We bounced around, but McKinley was probably the most common. We’d play that late night ball. We’d head over there after 9pm with our 40s in hand. We were young then, so we could do that… guzzle a 40, run up and down the court, and hold serve on that court until midnight. Memories…

We ended up working together and playing ball then too. We had a league; we won a couple titles there, until drinking and partying became a bit more important than winning games. We even played a handful of years ago… probably the last time I played any type of full court game. We played by his job, and ran some good games.
Now, in the 5th decade of my life (40s OK?), I think about playing again. I think about bringing the band back together; maybe an over 40 league so we don’t have to deal with these kids running circles around us. Play with all guys our age; that seems the most fair, and what would probably be the most fun. I’m not sure about the 40s before the game… maybe after… That would be cool.
Yeah, so Happy Birthday to my fellow Leo; birthdays a week apart. I’m not sure about all that horoscope stuff, but a lot of my closest friends over the years have been Leos. I almost forgot the nerf basketball we would play in my apartment. Yeah, we’d be liquored up for that too… almost put some guys through the drywall… haha. We played with Planet and Heroin Eye…. only one guy would know what I’m talking about. Peace.
Give me 2. ✌🏽🥃🥃
Awesome story my brother. Brought back so many memories and feelings. Both happy and sad. We were young, dominate, courageous, unstoppable, but then we grow up and our bodies and bones get older. Ice packs, heating pads, and naps. I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. We were and will always have each other backs. We shared so many memories on and off the court. Sometimes life moves so fast, that we forget to sit back and enjoy and reflect on the simplier times. Thank you for bringing back so many memories right now. I feel as if part of my life just flashed before me as I read this article. If Nerf had a hall of fame. It would definitely include the best 3 man team in Nerf basketball history. Danny Bo in the Middle, Planet at Foward and Heroin Eye at the point.
🏆🏀🍾💙
God Bless my Leo brother

Friends. You make so many of them throughout your life, but there are usually only a select few that know you and everything about you. It is always good to have a couple of them that will have your back no matter what, where, or why. I remember those basketball days playing with the bank. I also remember running courts at multiple parks. We had a good squad back in the day. A 40 and over league sounds good…I’ll be in next year!
