With the next two blogs, we’ll be wrapping up my son’s baseball season. This Friday was the last regular season game.
It was a matchup against the Nationals. The rivalry that started last year and continued on through floor hockey season fizzled this baseball season. The main reason was because we were so much better than them. We capped that off in the first inning of this game, and it was my son who did it.
It was my son who was knocked to the floor by the same coached team in floor hockey. Not sure if he remembers or not…almost positive he doesn’t make the connection between the two, but I do. That was one that I filed away; couldn’t wait to get on the field this year and get a little payback.
I smiled the first game we dominated them; shaking their coaches hand with a big grin. It was appropriate that we wrapped the season up against them. That coach wasn’t around for the rest of the season; I actually really liked his replacement. It was his daughter who made three nice plays against us which resulted in a tie game. Although if you ask my son, we’re undefeated. The domination in the first inning of this final game still made me smile.
The main reason was because my son was front and center. He plays first base every first inning before I move him around. The pitchers mound and first base are the positions everybody wants to play. I try to keep all the kids happy. Thankfully some are just happy building dirt volcanos in the infield. But since I am coach, the one thing I made sure, is that my son played first base every first inning, except one time. He almost melted down.

It’s not just because he’s my son, but because he’s the best first baseman on our team. Little lefty out there looks like Rizzo gobbling up ground balls, and snagging the throws over there. I’m proud all the time, but today was special.
He set a record: five outs in the first inning. He caught three throws over there and scooped up two ground balls himself before running to the base. After each out, he called out the number of outs. We’ve been watching a lot of baseball. After the first out, he waved one finger in the air; after the second, waved the two out sign. As we got the third, fourth, and fifth, he yelled the number of outs. It was awesome. I’m sure everybody watching was impressed. It had to be so demoralizing for the other team.
But the kids stay on base anyways; most of them don’t know any different. But I did.. and my son did. He was so proud of this record defensive performance. His hitting wasn’t the best that game, but his defense in the first made sure we had no losses going into the championship game the next day.
I hope one day when he gets older, he reads all this stuff I write about him. It’s one of the reasons why I keep it up nowadays. Something to look back on. Something to help the memories stay fresh. Something to pass on to him. Championship game is next.

5 outs in an inning would definitely be a record in the mlb…hahaha. Glad my nephew is playing so well. Love that he is lefty, too. Would be cool once he starts pitching. We could have 3 boys pitching before long…how sWeet would that be! Too bad they won’t be on the same team…now that would be aWesome! Congrats on the defensive gem in this one! Hoping the championship game is similar…maybe with some big hits this time! GO CUBS GO!!!
