August 8, 2018: 18 Years and Running

Summer is always fun.  First off, we have our nicest weather here in Chicago.  There will be arguments for every other season… yes, even winter; I can appreciate all of them.  I love the fall… the return of football, the cooling off from the summer heat.  Yes, I too love the winter; can’t beat snow and cold throughout the holiday season.  The spring is great because it’s the thawing out; once temps break above 40 degrees, spring fever begins.  But summer takes the cake.

One of the best parts about summer are the family vacations.  I was lucky enough to have a few of them these this year.  We kicked it off with a few days in Las Vegas.  The highlight was a week in San Diego.  There were many other things we did locally in Chicago that helped make this summer one of the best.  Family parties, playing baseball, Cubs games… the list goes on.  I feel like I appreciated this summer more than I have for a while.  I think it has to do with my son coming off his first full time school year.  With him being in school full time, our choices for vacation and other activities are limited.  We really took advantage of this summer; we have a little bit to go.

One of the other long running traditions of the summer is our annual golf trip.  It started off 18 years ago with my dad, brother, and I heading down to Myrtle Beach for a week of golfing.  Although that was our biggest and longest trip, each and every trip has been memorable.  Yeah, with this year’s trip coming to a conclusion, we made it out 16 out of 18 years.  Not too bad… It’s not always easy to get away, but we’ve tried to stick to it, even if it is only for 2 days & 1 night.

This year we were able to swing 3 days and 2 nights; that feels like the perfect timeframe at this point.  Much better than trying to slam everything into 1 night, while still being smart about the money and time away from the family.  About 6 years ago, we’ve added a new member to the annual trip to complete the foursome.  Our brother in law, who is excellent at golf by the way, joins us each year.  We really have a blast.  It’s fun to get away for a couple days with the only worry finding that little white ball we just hit in the rough.

We do keep score of course; it’s usually not too pretty, minus my brother in law’s high 70/low 80 score.  But that doesn’t matter.  Yes, we’re all competitive no doubt, but making a few good shots here and there, having a good 9, or even turning in a quality round out of the 4 rounds we shoot is enough for me.  This has become our only time to golf for some of us.  The same concerns of money and time away limit the amount of times we get out.

Man, I already wrote a lot and haven’t gotten into the details of this year’s trip.  Guess there’ll be a part two of 18 years and running…

Not even counting the golf part of the trip, it’s a really enjoyable time. This trip was the perfect time window. Gives us time to recover from all day in the sun, relax in the pool/hot tub, and ‘maybe’ play some cards until all hours.
    Every year is a blessing…….

After further review, this was year 19. Pretty crazy that 19 years ago we started it all in Myrtle Beach. I say a trip back for our 25 year anniversary! HAHAHA. It really does not matter where we go or how we shoot. Yes, we are all competitive and would rather play well than poorly, but what can we expect if it is our only time out. I just figure, imagine if I played more consistently, I might be ok at golf…hahaha. It is always a great time and looked forward to every year. I agree that the 2 night set up is better but definitely understand the money and time aspect. Hopefully, we can settle into 2 nights for the next 5 years before our week long bender in Myrtle Beach!
