October 10, 2014: Bears Falcons Preview

posted in: Bears | 5

The bass ackwards season takes a trip to the ATL this weekend to face the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome.  It’s been a season of losing when we thought we would win, and winning when we thought we would lose; at least that’s what it’s been like for me.  I have picked every single Bears game incorrectly to start the season.

Looking at the Atlanta game, and using that theory, I like our chances.  As we look at what Papa Vegas thinks about it, I am more excited.  Atlanta is favored by 3 points in this one.  If you know anything about gambling, that’s basically a PK EM game since the home team gets 3 points.  First instinct, by most bettors, and most people here in Chicago, is that Atlanta is going to win this weekend.  By looking at that line, and thinking about how backwards the season has been, maybe there is something else in store; maybe there is something to look forward to this Sunday.  Maybe the Bears will win another one they are “not supposed to”…

If that is the case, we’ll need a big performance by the offense.  We don’t need any turnovers, especially in the red zone.  We need to use ALL of our weapons.  We need the coaching staff to make correct in-game adjustments, specifically, 2nd half adjustments.  If we put checkmarks next to those 3 items, there is no reason why we cannot get a win down there.

Cutler plays a central role in everything that we need to do (duh, he is the QB).  Yeah, but his successful running of the offense, his play changing at the line of scrimmage, and his protecting of the ball in scoring position is really what we’re asking him to do every week.  Nobody is perfect, but for Cutler, it has been more than just what has he done so far this year; it’s about what has he done for us in the 6 years he has been in Chicago.  We’re seeing the same inconsistencies that we’ve seen since day one.  I hate to say it, but all we need right now is a Cutler injury; that would complete the perfect summary of Cutler’s Bear career of 6 years wrapped up in the first 6 games this year.  I don’t want that.  I want to gush over Jay.  I want to say how great he played, like the 2 road games earlier this year.  I want to build a statue of him after he brings us home a Super Bowl.  I want to cancel that hate file that he currently has reserved for him after his Bears career is over.  That’s a whole lot of Cutler, but when you make someone your franchise QB, for a team that really never had a franchise QB, great things are expected.  Sorry Jay, that’s just the way it is.  Get us back on the gravy train, and lead us to a win this Sunday.  Jay needs to be big.

Jay needs to be big, because it’s hard to imagine the Falcons NOT scoring points on us.  Matt Ryan to Julio Jones may be something we hear a lot of on Sunday.  They are especially dangerous at home, so you have to think we need to score at least 28 points to win this one.  The defense hasn’t been that bad.  They have lapses though; lapses that are costly, like not covering Greg Olsen this past weekend.  The defense against the run has been solid, which if it continues, will force Matty Ice to throw more… which means more Julio… which means a lot of points.  Let’s keep them around 20 defense.

Special teams is the weakest link.  Who will we have to defend this week?  It’s none other than all-time leading return man, and ex-Bear, Devin Hester.  You think he’ll have a chip on his shoulder?  You think Atlanta will draw up some plays specifically for him on offense too?  Thinking about this makes me sick.  The ex-Bear factor has already got us once…  Hester will get in the end zone on Sunday, hopefully it will be in a losing effort.

Final Score Prediction:  Bears 31 Falcons 30

Yeah, I know I said I was going oppo the rest of the way out, but I’m sticking to my pre-season picks.  I picked the Bears to win this game when I looked at the schedule 6 months ago.  I think they surprise us this Sunday, and get back to .500.

Ace In The Hole–>  Jay Cutler 350 yards passing + 4 TDs + game winning drive

Yeah, go figure.  The guy I love to hate is my Ace In The Hole.  I really want him to do good; he has to for the Bears to be any good.  He has to for us to win this weekend.  He will… on Sunday… in the Georgia Dome… be good enough… really good… and the Bears will be back.

BEAR DOWN BABY!!!
