August 6, 2018: MLB Legacy

posted in: Bears | 0

When I say MLB Legacy, I’m not talking about Major League Baseball.  I’m talking about the Middle Line Backer Legacy that the Chicago Bears franchise has.  Brian Urlacher joined Bill George, Dick Butkus, and Mike Singletary in the HOF this past weekend.

I’m still trying to catch up… As part of it, I went back and listened to his Hall of Fame speech…. pretty damn good.  He talked about this legacy.  He talked about family and football, and how the two intertwined throughout his life.  I really enjoyed the speech.

Urlacher was never an outspoken guy, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a leader.  He lead by example every game out there.  Loved watching him play.  He is the last current Bears player whose jersey I own.

It was the playoff game vs Philly; the last game before Soldier Field got remodeled.  I’ve told this story before, but really quick… my girlfriend at the time (now wife), waited in line to get playoff tickets.  It was a raffle, and they pulled the number a few people in front of her.  She got them!  When she told me, I was so happy.  I was going to a Bears playoff game!

These habits may include talking to the girl, I escalated very carefully buy levitra which is why the guy was cool with me. We were bundled up; we stopped at Miller’s Pub before the game to “warm up”.  I had my Bears ski cap on, but for some reason, wasn’t wearing a jersey; maybe I didn’t even have one then.  I had plenty of gear, but no Bears jerseys… could that be?  I got my Butkus jersey a handful of years later, same with my Payton one.  Yep, so I had no Bears jerseys at the time.  I needed one.  As we walked into the stadium, I did it; I overpaid and got my Urlacher jersey.

I saw him out partying in Chicago back in the day at the same club I was at.  I would pick the Bears in Madden and always control Urlacher in the middle of my Cover 2 defense; I loved roaming the field just like him, making picks, coming up and making hits… doing it all.  I was at the famous MNF game in Arizona where Urlacher went nuts; he was awesome that game.  He was awesome a lot of games.  So many memories…  I absolutely loved that Bears team.  Of course, I was alive and recall the 85 Bears; there will never be another.  But these Lovie Bears teams… the team that made it to the Super Bowl… they were great in their own right.  With the speed and knack for causing turnovers, man, they mastered that cover 2.  They should have won the Super Bowl.  The biggest difference between that team and the 85 team was the offense; only if we had an offense those years…

My favorite story of Urlacher is the one my friend told me; I believe I wrote about it here before.  Anyways, his son was born premature and spend the first number of weeks of his life in the hospital; his neighbor in the ICU was Urlacher’s lawyer’s kid.  My friend talked with the lawyer plenty of times during that time, and found out who he was; he told him he was a Bears fan.  So when Urlacher came and visited his lawyer’s kid, he left my buddy a gift.  He signed a picture and addressed it to his son.  Just one of those many things that never get out in the media… but one of those things that will be remembered for a lifetime.

I’ll never forget Urlacher.  When he talked about the Bears fans in his speech, I started choking up.  When he mentioned some of his teammates on those teams, I smiled.  When he came out during the HOF game and high fived every current Bears player, I thought that was so cool… just like the jersey he wore during the parade… not his, but 34.  He gets it.  He’ll be a Bear for life.  Congrats 54… Bear Down!

Brian Urlacher, the middle linebacker! Welcome to the Hall of Fame and congrats! You definitely deserve it. I have his jersey as well and wear every Bears season. He had so many great games with the Bears, but none better than that game vs arizona. I was not happy when he retired, but I was glad that he never played for another team. He probably could have played another season or two, but if not for the Bears, better that he retired. He was the ideal middle linebacker for Lovie’s cover 2. He fit the Bears middle linebacker tradition perfectly. Maybe roquan can take some pointers once he gets on the field and be the next great Bears mlb. Thanks again Urlacher! BEAR DOWN!!!
