August 4, 2018: End of the Season

With only one more weekend remaining, we’re coming to the end of the season… my Cubs 4-6 year old team season of course.  It’s been an interesting year.

The year started off rainy as hell; it pretty much wiped out all of our practices for the remainder of the season.  So instead of practicing on Friday, and having a game on Saturday, it was game-game; it’s been like this the last couple weeks.  It will be like that in our final weekend.  That was kind of disappointing.  Practice is where we really make our strides of improvement… at least that’s the way it went last year.

Without practice, our team didn’t improve as much as I would have liked.  Don’t get me wrong, we did improve.  Kids are getting better at hitting the pitching.  They’re getting better on the field.  They’re getting better with their throws.  Just not as much as I would have liked.  Still, we easily have the best team in the league.

One of the best qualities of our team is that we show up.  The other three teams in the league have struggled from week to week with getting enough kids to play.  It was the same this weekend; actually, this weekend was a first.  The team we were supposed to play didn’t show up… none of them.  After talking with them the following day, they claimed they didn’t know there was a game scheduled for that day.  With all the rescheduling, I guess it’s understandable.  After all, I did screw up last year in the final week of basketball season.  I’ll give them a mulligan.

So we walked over to the other field to get our game in.  The 2 teams playing on that field had 5-6 kids each; we combined their team and played against them with our 10.  I’m glad we’re able to work stuff out like this.  I guess we could have had a good practice… but the kids do love the games of course, especially when we were scheduled to play one.

The game went well.  All the kids had fun.  I’m going to miss that.

Not sure what’s going to happen after this year with baseball for my son.  At the current park district, he would be moving up to the next age bracket… 7-9.  So one of the best kids in the league would be a newbie, but that would be fine.  I just don’t know if there’s a slot for me to coach a team; I definitely want to keep coaching…. head coaching.  Maybe we’ll move to a location a bit closer to our house.  Those are all decisions for next year.

As far as our other game, we played to a “tie”.  Of course we don’t keep score, but I keep track of the outs each team records on defense.  We had 3 outs, and were coasting to another “victory” until the other team put their best player at first base in the final inning.  They recorded 3 outs in the final inning, thus the tie.  When I was complimenting the other coach about that player, he said “that’s my daughter”.  I’m sure it felt good to hear that; I wasn’t lying… she was good.  We then talked about my son, and the next year jump; he told me he’s more than ready… that felt good to hear for someone else.

So we wind down… 10-0-1 is the unofficial record heading into the final weekend of the year.  Our last scheduled game will be on Friday; the “championship” will be on Saturday.  I wish the season went longer…

It is tough to finish up any season of sports. I think it is even tougher when you have the best team in the league because you never know if that will happen again. It is always better to win, even when you do not officially keep score. Congrats on the blemish free record so far! Hope the final 2 games end up with a “championship” for the Cubs! GO CUBS GO!!!
