If there was a vote for most disappointing Cubs player this year, mine would be for Addison Russell.
I remember him before we got him. I don’t claim to know a lot about the minor leagues, etc, but I had heard of this guy…maybe because he was such a super prospect. Then 2014 rolled around. The Cubs started off horribly…totally in the tank. Then they started to play better towards the end of the first half. Maybe this Cubs team, could keep it rolling, climb the standings. Then July 4th came, and the big trade was announced.
I was pissed at first, but when I heard that we got Addison Russell in the deal, I was a little less angry. I was just sick of being sellers; this would be the last time. And with this last dump, we got a top top prospect; it was a very good trade.
When Addison first started, his defense impressed me the most. Sick of Starlin’s poor defensive instincts, I knew once I saw Russell play SS…once Starlin moved to 2B, he would never come back; he never did. Addison had locked down SS.
Then the kid could hit too. Remember he got hurt in the NLDS the following year vs the Cardinals. He wasn’t around for that sweep by the Mets. Would he have made a difference? Probably not enough to win that series, but maybe a game. The following year he broke out big time. A big time RBI guy, with a knack for some big dingers, like against the Dodgers in Game 5 I believe…against the Indians in Game 6. For sure, this guy would be locked and loaded for more than a decade in the Cubs lineup.

He also had some off the field issues. Nothing ever came of it, but he did split up with his fiancée/wife? He had one child with her; he’s added a least one since then. He seems to be enjoying himself off the field, but on the field he has not shown anything similar to 2016 since then.
His defense seems to be a little lacking too…not much, just some bad judgment around the time he has to throw a guy out, whether to charge or wait back, his throws are an adventure sometimes. His decline on offense is more noticeable. Seemingly making good contact early in the year with no results, he hasn’t broken out yet. Do we need Addison to be that guy from 2016?
With all the Cubs depth, maybe we don’t need that guy. But who will he be? What will he give us, both now and going forward. On Tuesday, he came up with a huge hit in the 9th, but then took his hand off sliding into third; he was called out, and the Cubs lost by one. Should the replay have been overturned? Not sure, but he sure looked out. Bad play at the end of the day. I know he beat the throw, but you can’t make that mistake he did…not in the middle of a pennant race; those things will hurt.
I thought Addy would be moved as part of a package for Machado. Then I thought the weekend where he was getting rested in St. Louis, he would be packaged up for someone else at the deadline. Neither happened, but depending on how the rest of this season plays out, and the free agents make their decisions, he still may be gone.
I know he’s still young. I know what we’ve seen from him in the past. But I’m getting a little tired waiting for Addy. The Cubs are in prime time territory; the window is wide open. We need to take full advantage…I want multiple titles. If Addy can help us do that, great; if he can’t, then he may not be at SS for a decade. Still wanting him to come around…still trying to be patient…wanting to get back to the Series. Go Cubs!!!

Addison Russell has definitely been a disappointment this year and last. He was huge for the Cubs in 2016 and was instrumental in helping them win the World Series. Last year, he had off the field issues plus some injuries. This year, nothing seems to be going his way, either. I have been behind him and did not want to trade him for machada. I still believe he can turn things around. He has the rest of this year and the postseason to show his worth to the Cubs. If nothing, I will be off his train and ready to see what the Cubs could possibly get for him. The talent and potential is definitely there. What is holding him back? Imagine the Cubs getting 2016 Addy back this year…uh, yes please! The patience is waning. Get it done, Addy! GO CUBS GO!!!
