July 26, 2018: Ticket Surprise

posted in: Cubs | 0

I got a ticket surprise.  I got a ticket sur-pri-i-ise.  I got a ticket surprise, and I don’t care…

It was just another day at work.  Meetings, emails, etc… fun stuff.  All the while looking out at the beautiful day this Thursday was in Chicago.  Actually, I was finishing up a blog from a couple days ago… talking about how beautiful Wrigley Field was on Monday night when I was there.  Even updated my profile pictures on Twitter with some snaps from that evening (oooh).

Anyways, just plugging along, and remembered that I hadn’t thanked the folks that gave me the tickets for that Monday game.  So I sent an email.  Minutes later, I received one back saying something like this “No problem, you’re welcome, sorry the Cubs lost.  By the way, the person who had tickets for today’s game just returned them because they are unable to attend; are you interested?”  Yeah, that ticket surprise I was referring to…

The last time I got an email like this, I couldn’t go.  I was swamped at work, with no chance of getting out.  Thursday was different.  I checked my calendar, and only had 2 meetings.  One of them I never attend, and was only going to attend this time because somebody was out of the office.  The other one is about a 50/50 proposition.  Thursday afternoons are one of the best times at work as far as meetings go.  Of course I had other work to do, but… that’s why you come back the next day, right?  I responded yes.

Called my wife; she didn’t want to go, but would drop my son off by Wrigley.  So I had 2 tickets left.  Always like to consider everybody else in the office first.  One No, and another No followed by a suggestion of who may be interested.  I asked her, and she was.  Perfect.  All tickets accounted for.  No tickets will be wasted.  Declined my meetings.  Blocked off my calendar.  Time to get my ass on the train to Wrigley.

Did I mention it was a beautiful day?  Wow.  It was actually a little bit hot sitting in that blaring sun, with my Cubs jersey on over my Bears t-shirt that I had wore to work.  Yeah, not sure if that’s appropriate attire for work either, but it’s summer dress code time, so, it’s all good.  Still, sweating a bit at the game, as we sat in our seats in the top of the 1st inning.  Not bad for finding out about these tickets only an hour earlier.

Cubs actually jumped out to a lead in this one.  I was worried of course, with Chatwood on the mound; he’s been frustrating to say the least, especially with all of his walks.  My son said he would do good today.  He did manage to get through the first few innings unscathed… barely… thanks to a great play by Bote at 2B… Then things fell apart.  He didn’t give up the grand slam, but he helped put us in that predicament.  Cubs down big… to the Dbacks… again.

This time they struck right back and chopped 2 runs off the lead, yet when the 9th inning rolled around it was still a 6-4 deficit.  Do I need to tell you what happened next?  Yeah, where we were sitting, wasn’t sure if that Bote shot had enough… it did; game tied.  Place was going bananas.  I was jumping up and down with my son, just like everybody else, as the Dbacks gathered on the mound.  Rizzo was up next.

Nobody had to wonder about that one.  When he hit it, you knew, and if you didn’t, you just had to watch the right fielder; he didn’t flinch… just started slowly walking in.  Wrigley went crazy!  One of the coolest parts, sitting down the left field line, was watching Rizzo round 3rd base, and see everybody waiting for him at home plate.  It was so awesome.  It reminded me of that Sports Illustrated cover when Baez hit that walk-off on Mother’s Day against the Nationals in 2016.  Yeah, it was that same kind of feeling… only 100x better being there.

I’m having a lot of similar feelings this year that I had in 2016; last year not so much.  But this year… the goodness is flowing.  Each year is different no doubt, but these comeback Cubs are stirring up some pretty positive emotions in me; some dangerously optimistic emotions.  We’ve seen bad losses, we have our share of injury problems, but this team… these guys… it’s hard for me to envision them not making their 4th straight NLCS… and more!  Not cocky, just feeling it right now.  Log this one in for one of the best games I ever attended in person.  Go Cubs!!!

Free tickets? Yeah, can’t beat that. Getting to a Wrigley afternoon game on a beautiful day is definitely unexpected but certainly welcome. The Cubs rewarded the visit with another come from behind W. How many times are they going to do that this year? Would much rather have a lead and get the W, but I cannot complain. Anyway the Cubs get the W is just fine with me. Bote has been great filling in for KB. Rizzo’s shot was a no doubter. And just like that, the Cubs flew the W flag! GO CUBS GO!!!
