July 23, 2018: Javy Mania

posted in: Cubs | 1

Who would have thunk it?  We planned to get to the park early on this Monday evening.  We definitely wanted to get the giveaway, the Javy Baez bobblehead.  We told my son we would bring it home for him.  We walked up to the park at about 430… 30 minutes before the gates opened.  We just couldn’t believe how many people were already in line.  We went from gate to gate, looking for a reasonable line; we didn’t find one.  We settled on the left field gate, which was the gate we were actually supposed to enter in.  We didn’t have high hopes.  With all these thousands of people in line, being part of that first 10,000 may not happen.  That would suck.

We started talking to a season ticket holder in line.  He expressed how much he hates the bobblehead days.  People come just for the giveaway, and put it right away on eBay.  Besides the fact that it is an absolute madhouse, and pain to just get into the park.  He said the Contreras bobblehead was pretty bad, but he knew this one would be worse.  After all, it is Javy Baez…

We could be talking about the National League MVP here; no joke.  He started for the NL at 2nd base in the All Star game.  He’s been the best player on the Cubs this year.  He is a human highlight reel on the field.  He is a tag aficionado.  He is a wizard on the base paths.  His sliding techniques are unmatched.  He crushes the ball to all fields, as long as he’s swinging at strikes.  He is the most exciting player in the game today.  Plus, the bobblehead… it’s the one where he was blowing the bubble while hitting the ball out of the park; it looked really nice.  And now, we were in jeopardy of not getting it.

Javy, Javy, Javy is what the crowd lined up started chanting when the camera panned to us.  Just like the chants that he’s received multiple times this year, both at home and away.  I still remember his debut in Colorado.  Obviously he was a highly touted prospect; couldn’t wait for him to make his debut, and he didn’t disappoint.  We had decided to take a ride to the south side that evening, to the famous Rainbow Cone.  We were listening to Pat and Ron when Baez went deep in Coors Stadium.  Yeah, he struck out a whole lot… an alarming amount of times, but that’s since been corrected.  He still has his moments, and it is frustrating at times, but the good far outweighs the bad; he is a legitimate MLB superstar.

5pm rolled around and the gates opened.  Everybody pushed forward towards the gate.  The season ticket holder next to us told us we’d be right on the edge of getting one or not; he was right.  My wife and I got a bit separated, as she got through the gates first; she got her bobblehead!  As I walked through security, they were on their last box; I just got one too.  10 minutes and 10,000 bobbleheads were gone.  Insane… it truly was Javy Mania!

Javy Baez has carried the Cubs this year and should be a legitimate MVP consideration so far. He really can do it all and would be better than manny ramirez based on his glove, baserunning, and sliding. Pretty crazy how nuts the bobblehead days are. Glad you were able to snag a couple. Let’s hope Javy keeps his MVP numbers up all year, and the rest of the Cubs get hot at the right time so they are clicking on all cylinders. GO CUBS GO!!!
