July 22, 2018: The Five Game Series

posted in: Cubs | 1

Pretty crazy to have a five game series with a team in the regular season.  That has to be pretty uncommon; I can’t remember the last 5 game series the Cubs had.  Maybe if I check on Twitter, one of those stats guys posted something.  I wonder how common it is period, across all of the MLB.  I like the 5 game series, because just like the 3 game series, somebody will win the series.  The 4 game series is cool, but you could walk away with a split; what fun is that.  Sunday would be the rubber match in the Cubs Cardinals 5 game series in Wrigley that opened up the 2nd half of the season.

I do remember the last five game series the Cubs and Cardinals played.  Yes, 2015… the year before THE year.  We beat the Cardinals to move on to the NLCS, the first of three straight; well, it will be four straight this year, right?  With the Machado deal, the Cubs and Dodgers look to be on another collision course; that will be round 3 of that postseason battle.  I’m up for it.  Lots of baseball to play though, for everybody.

The Cubs and Cardinals games always seem to be good games; this series was no exception, except for the Friday blowout of course.  Glad I didn’t sit and watch that game.  But I did see the end of Sunday’s rubber match.

The glaring difference between these clubs is the bullpen.  You combine that with the fact the Cubs lead the majors in comeback victories, and you really don’t mind the Cubs falling behind early.  They did again on this day.  This day would be their 32nd comeback victory of the year.

How about Rizzo at lead off in this series?  If I heard correctly, he reached base 17 times in these 5 games; that’s insane!  I really like Almora at the top of the lineup, and I do think he’ll be back at the top of the lineup before it’s all said and done, but… ride this Rizzo train for a bit.  I’m OK with it, as long as Joe does go back to Albert eventually.  But here I go with the lineup concerns with Joe again…  maybe I should just stop already.  I heard something, and don’t remember the exact information, but basically that none of the Cubs position players are at the top of the innings played this year.  That’s good, considering the goal will be to play in the neighborhood of 175 games per year.  There is a method to his madness people; we know this right?

Speaking about methods, I love, love the small acquisition that the Cubs made.  Really like Jesse Chavez, and he shined in his two appearances this weekend.  Another trusted arm coming out of the pen cannot be underestimated.  Is Britton next?  Don’t want to give up too much, but we’re in position again, so… whatever it takes!

Fun to beat the Cardinals.  It’s more fun to see the 3.5 game lead in the standings.  We need to keep pushing… let’s open up that lead to double digits.  The Brewers have played really well, except the whole losing 8 of their last 9 thing.  If they don’t get it together quickly, the Cubs could run away with this thing.  I wouldn’t mind.  Now let’s focus on not having a let down series against the Dbacks; we’ll be in the house Monday night for the series opener.  Let’s keep it rolling boys; go Cubs!

A 5 game series is pretty cool even though it is definitely not common. I agree that the 3 and 5 games series will at least have a winner unlike the 4 game splits. Glad the Cubs were able to finish off the red turds and take the series. Hopefully, they will continue their free fall with their manager gone and seeing the Cubs on top again has to boil their blood. Get used to it red turds as the Cubs will keep dropping deuces on you from above…hahaha.
I like the bullpen get, too. Can never have enough arms back there, especially giving Joe more options to trust when it matters most. Rizzo at the top is fine for now, but he will not be there in the playoffs. Hopefully, KB will be back and they can slide back into the 2-3 holes. GO CUBS GO!!!
