July 13, 2018: A Constant

posted in: Cubs | 1

Amusement parks and sporting events, usually a Cubs game, are two ingredients for a family vacation; the third constant is going to a zoo.  Being in San Diego, it doesn’t get much better than this.

We’re lucky to have two zoos in Chicago:  Lincoln Park & Brookfield.  We’re members of Lincoln Park Zoo, and when my son was young, were there regularly.  Now, not so much, but it’s still part of the rotation.  We’ve been to Brookfield once; we actually went a lot more when I was a kid.  In our recent trips, we’ve hit the St. Louis and Cincinnati zoos; I was really impressed with the St. Louis Zoo.. not so much with the Cincy one.  My wife and I have hit both the Los Angeles and Columbus zoos as well.  But when it comes to the best zoo, San Diego takes the cake.  This was my son’s first visit.

The zoo lived up to its top billing.  They have everything there.  Trying to determine which animals were our favorites wasn’t easy.  The lions are always easy choices.  We got lucky there, considering lions sleep 20 hours per day.  We got to them just as the male was waking up.  He walked over to these rocks, jumped up on them, and then leapt across to his pedestal.  Then, before lying back down, he roared for about 30 seconds; it was awesome.  Then he took a piss and went to sleep.

The komodo dragon is really cool too.  He was very active, pacing back and forth in his home.  The pandas, the only ones on the West Coast, were cool to see as well.  The giraffes, who actually galloped for us, were beautiful.  Those huge suckers, the elephants, are always impressive.  But it was a dark horse that ended up being my favorite.

The Galapagos turtles were the best.  These suckers are huge… like 600 pounds huge.  And they’re old… like over 100 years old.  The guy had a photograph when they came to San Diego Zoo back around 1928; they were 30 years old at the time.  He also shared some cool facts, like their hearts only beat 6 times per minute; probably helping them live so long.  Also, their huge shells… only make up about 10% of their total body weight.  And they can live up to 150 years old… just awesome.

So we had LEGOLAND and the Zoo, then LEGOLAND again in the books; they were 3 very full days of action.  I was excited to settle down for the night, and watch the Cubs play the Padres in game 1 of their series on this Friday the 13th night.  Only one problem… they weren’t on TV.

I was shocked.  I called the front desk; they couldn’t help.  I found out later that the Padres home games are blacked out.  I thought it had something to do with the cable companies too.  I just couldn’t believe it, not being able to watch your hometown team play their game.  And of course I missed a good one.  Saw the highlights, and it was an awesome victory.  Coming up next is the 3rd planned event of our vacation, and the one you probably are most interested in.  We had tickets to the Cubs Padres game on Saturday night.  Let’s Go Cubbies!

The zoo is a great place to hang out for a day. And you’re right, we are lucky to have 2 zoos in Chicago…Lincoln Park and Brookfield. I don’t remember the last time I was at Lincoln Park, but we have been members at Brookfield for some years now. The kids love seeing the animals, dolphin show, riding the tram, and all the other good things going on there. San Diego zoo sounds aWesome, too…something for the list once we make it out west.
