July 10, 2018: Bryzzo Status

posted in: Cubs | 1

Noticeably missing in the Cubs all star selections this year is the famous Bryzzo company.  No Anthony Rizzo; no Kris Bryant.  Is anybody concerned?

One of the best parts of this Cubs team is its depth.  There are times when there isn’t an easy out in the lineup.  However, if I were to ask you who the top two guys were in this lineup; if I were to ask you who the best two players on this team were, it would be Bryant and Rizzo.   I don’t think there would be any other duo more popular then them.  Yet, this year, it’s Contreras and Baez.  Another year it was Russell.  You have the beasts of the postseason in Zobrist and Schwarber.  You have a budding star in Almora, and maybe Happ.  Yeah, that’s the whole fricking lineup.

This depth is critical to achieve the goal that Theo set for this franchise; to regularly compete for a playoff appearance.  A down year is losing in the NLCS, kind of like last year.  There has been no Cubs team in my lifetime that matched this.  And we’re still in the beginning stages of this window; that’s scary good.

On Monday night, as the newly minted All Stars in Javy and Willson were center stage (I know, Lester is there too), what’s up with Kris and Anthony?  Well, Kris has been solid.  Again, check his numbers; that’s a down year for him thus far.  He’s been banged up.  Besides being hit in the head, he’s now rehabbing a nagging shoulder injury that you have to think has been affecting his power.  He actually made a rehab appearance in double A.  Bet that game down in Tennessee was a sell out, as KBoom went deep.  Another game or two, and we’ll meet you in San Diego Kris.

Anthony has been on a roller coaster.  Coming out of the gates horribly, he followed that up with a phenomenal May.  Then he went back down again; he continues to battle at the dish.  Still, they threw a stat up there during the broadcast that showed his consistency.  Four straight years with more than 50 ribbies before the All Star break.  I’ll take that.  And yes, even though he missed a couple throws at 1B today, he’s as solid as they come on the field.  And oh yeah, if you’re going to point to one guy who leads this team, it would be Anthony.

So after further review, Bryzzo is doing just fine.  They’re not tearing up the league or anything, but they’re doing what they do.  We know what to expect from them, and just like this entire team, we expect the best.  We’re disappointed with anything less.  There’s no question these guys give it their all day in day out, setting examples for everybody else.  And before it’s all said and done, they will be the two guys that will take us as far as we’re going to go.

But the real beauty of it all, is that even if they’re a notch short, we have the horses who can pick up the slack.  The Cubs are still near the top of the NL even though we haven’t seen Bryzzo in full effect.  That’s scary news for the rest of the NL; that’s music to our ears.  We’re ready when you are boys.  Go Cubs!

If you told me before this year started that neither Bryant or Rizzo would make the all-star team, I would have asked what you were smoking. I also would think that the Cubs would be in trouble. Fortunately, the Cubs are just fine and so are KB and Rizz. Yes, both are having down years. KB seems like it is due to injuries while Rizz just can’t keep the consistency going. It really speaks to the Cubs depth and talent that they are battling for the top of the division and nl. If KB and Rizz get hot in the 2nd half, watch out! Just make sure KB is healthy. If that shoulder is not right, sit him down for whatever time is needed, except all season. The Cubs need KB…and Rizz. They’ll be there when it matters leading the Cubs into the playoffs! GO CUBS GO!!!
