With both the Cubs and White Sox sitting on their couches again this postseason, who are you rooting for?
Let’s start with who I don’t want to win it all… the St. Louis Cardinals. Obvious enough isn’t it? I hate that team, and I hate the team they’re playing, the Los Angeles Dodgers. But, I will be rooting for them to beat the Cardinals… and then to lose whoever they play next. I could be in trouble in the National League, with the Nationals going down 0-2, since the SF Giants are the next team I would least like to see win it all. After the Pirates got knocked out, Washington was my only hope out of the NL. If they get knocked out, I have to turn to the AL.
Right now, I’d like to see KC win above anybody. The way they’ve been playing, the way they’ve been winning; the only team to win 3 straight extra inning games in the postseason, and a team that hasn’t been in the playoffs in 29 years… yeah, I got enough reasons to cheer for them. Honestly, if they don’t win, the next team I’d like to see take it is Baltimore. I like Showalter as a manager, and they really seem to play team ball. If Anaheim or Detroit come back and move on, I’d be OK with either of them. The Royals are who I’m rolling with right now though.
It’s actually fun to watch baseball when your team is not playing. I’m not saying it isn’t fun to watch the Cubs play; it’s just stressful as hell. To hang on every pitch… to have your day determined by a win or a loss… to get so emotionally into the game… it wears on you. To sit back and watch a baseball game between 2 other teams, is relaxing. Yeah, I may be rooting for one team or another, but it really doesn’t matter at the end of the day who wins… if it doesn’t involve the Cubs. There is no threat of heartbreak. It’s just baseball.

I like to root for the underdog, and for someone who hasn’t won in a long time. Make sense? I was actually happy when the Red Sox won the World Series, although I was cheering against them the 2nd time. I was rooting for Texas, yes because they were playing the RedTurds, but also because they hadn’t won either. The way they went out was brutal; I could see that happening to the Cubs. I guess going down that path, I should have been rooting for the White Sox to win in 2005… especially since they play in this city I love; I wasn’t though. I really didn’t watch any of the series, because I didn’t want to root against the Sox. Maybe if the Cubs had won already, I could have cheered them on, but because the Cubs still hadn’t done it, because the latest heartbreak was still so fresh, I couldn’t find myself to root for the Sox; that’s the truth. I was happy that they won for my Dad who is a Sox fan, and I was happy for the city of Chicago, but I did not get one ounce of happiness from it. Sorry, I just didn’t.
I don’t like seeing teams win too much. This is another reason to hate the Cardinals, but another reason why I don’t want the Giants to win it all, although I do like a lot of their players. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Giants come out of the National League again. They just have that team that plays their best when it counts. They have several players like that including Buster Posey and Kung Fu, both ex-fantasy players of mine. If they get past the Nats, I have to ride with them to the Series… and then root for whoever comes out of the AL.
Some years I don’t even watch the playoffs. It’s happened more since 2003, and then even more since 2008. The sick feeling in my stomach from those years doesn’t allow me to enjoy it. But… that feeling is subsiding a little bit. I can actually watch the playoffs again, and enjoy it. I can actually watch and picture the Cubs back in it. I watch, as if the Cubs were playing. It’s like I’m getting a practice/trial run at the postseason again through another team. I feel some emotion doing it that way, but nothing will compare. When the Cubs make it back next year, I will need to be sedated. The wave of emotion that will accompany the next Cubs postseason appearance will be great; it’s been building up for what will be 7 years by the end of next year. I’m ready again. I’m ready to see the Cubs give it another shot. I’m ready to go all in emotionally one more time. I’m ready to see the Cubs make it all worth it. It’s time. It’s our turn. Like I said, I can’t wait until next year…

I’ll be rooting for the AL and particularly the Royals 110% to win it all. George Brett was one of my favorites growing up. Is it 1985? Old school match up, Orioles vs KC.
I will also be rooting against the Washington Nationals. I hope they get pounded simple because of the way they run there organization. Arrogant move when they basically forfeited previous playoff runs by shutting down players and pitching September call ups when your still very much in the hunt. How’d you like to be fan of them when they did that, or a season ticket holder?
