Back to the field on Saturday morning for another burner. It was early though. With a 930am start time, it was already hot, although we did beat the real heat.
This was our first game against this team… the same team that forfeited the previous day due to the heat. As we started to get to the park (of course my son and I are always the first ones), everybody was on the field. I rotated the kids batting off the tee as they showed up. Meanwhile, the other team huddled in the shade waiting for the game to begin… that’s funny to me.
It’s funny because this coach is the same guy that we played against in floor hockey. He’s the guy preaching to me “it’s hockey” when one of his kids whose age I’m questioning due to his size plowed into my son. Yet here he sits… huddled in the shade before the game; same guy who called the park the day before requesting to reschedule his game, then deciding to just forfeit it. So which is it? You trying to “toughen” these kids up, or coddle them…. acting like we’re playing in Death Valley out there… funny.
Anyways, my kids were running around like maniacs before the game. As the game started, everybody was fine. Everybody had waters; I brought a cooler full of juices. We were good… just like we always are. There were still kids zoning out, playing in the sand, walking around the field in a circle. That’s our norm; no different today in this “blazing” heat.

As the game started and went on, it was obvious who the better team was. But again, that’s not most important here; I have to keep telling myself that, because I really wanted to stick it to this team, really the coach, and give him a little payback from floor hockey. It wasn’t close. In the middle of the 2nd, he came over wanting to cut the game after 2 innings; I said no.
As his team all hit off the tee in the 3rd, we gave our kids a choice of pitching or tee. The 3rd inning is supposed to be for pitching. It was about half and half. I liked the oohs and ahhs when our kids that did want the pitching cracked it. We haven’t practiced the pitching a whole lot this year, but we still did our thing out there.
And we survived… Lined them up immediately after the game to shake hands. And when they asked me who won, I told them. Afterwards, I told them all to find a pool. We did our hands in the middle ritual… 1, 2, 3 DONUTS, for the donuts one of the parents brought. All the juice boxes were gone, as were the donuts soon after the game. It’s good to be back…

That blazing desert heat in Chicago is tough…hahaha. Yes, when the temps and heat index rise, it is hot in Chicago, but isnt that what summer is supposed to be here? Seriously, some people are just ridiculous. Baseball is meant to be played in the summer heat, not inside domes when the weather is too hot. Glad the kids embraced the heat and got the W. GO CUBS GO!!!
