June 16, 2018: Odds Check

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

In honor of my trip to Las Vegas, we’ll take a quick spin around the major sports odds.

It’s something I always take a peek at.  Taking a dip to the sports book, picking up the futures.  It’s fun to look at, and speculate what could be.  I never really play them, except for that one time I bet the Cubs to win the 2016 World Series…  not the first time I bet that, but the first time I won it.  That’s where we’ll start.  How are the MLB odds looking on June 16?

Let’s start with the favorites.  At 4-1, the Yankees are the current World Series favorite.  They didn’t start the season that way.  They were one of the favorites at 10-1, but now have climbed to the top.  I cannot knock that.  Sure, the Yankees are one of those public teams that always gets money bet on them, but they deserve it this year.  Their offense is impressive, however, I’m still a bit skeptical about their pitching.  Get to their bullpen and Chappy, OK… but getting there may be the key.

The other top favorite, holding steady at 5-1 since the start of the year, is the Houston Astros.  Again, hard to argue that one.  They are probably the best balanced team.  There offense is sick, their starting pitching may even be sicker.  However, I do think their bullpen is a weakness…  Nobody is perfect.

There are 3 other teams that have better than 10-1 odds.  The Nationals are at 9-1.  The Red Sox are 7-1.  And finally, the Cubs are 6-1.  I think that’s a fair group completing the top 5 teams in the majors right now.  The Dodgers, Indians, and Brewers (who went from 40-1 to 14-1) are creeping right outside this group.  What does it all mean?

Well for starters, Vegas knows what they’re doing.  I don’t think there is any argument with any of the favorites, including our Cubs.  Their odds have inched up since the start of the year when they started at 7-1.  Of course, just like the top 2 favorites in the AL, the Cubs aren’t perfect.  Our hitting, although impressive, goes silent at times.  Our starters have been solid, except we haven’t really gotten anything from Chatwood or Darvish, our two offseason acquisitions; think we’re going to need something from these guys if we want to cash in those odds.  And then our bullpen… very solid; not perfect, but very, very solid.  We’re not in 1st place yet, but I think it’s only a matter of time, and I do think we should be the favorites in the National League, and I do think we’ll be playing one of the AL favorites in the Series.

On the flip side of the coin, if you’re feeling lucky about any of these teams:  the Marlins, Orioles, Royals, or yes, the White Sox, you would get 1500-1 on your money.  A $10 bet would get you back 15K!  Cha ching!  Although there is a reason why these teams are such huge underdogs…

That’s the state of things in baseball from Papa Vegas’ view.  Let’s move on.

Cool to look at future odds and speculate as to what will happen. Here we sit, almost halfway done with the baseball season, and some of the odds have shifted while others are relatively stable. The yunkees at 4-1 are obvious favorites right now. They hype is real for them as it usually is when they are decent. The defending champs asstros at 5-1 are also tough to argue with, but I do not see a repeat in their future. The Cubs at 6-1 are the highest nl team…can’t argue with that. They have the talent to get back to the nlcs and beyond. They have yet to put it all together…patiently waiting. Imagine hitting a monster odds bet. 1500-1 at $10 for $15k sounds real nice but what are the legit chances? Slim and none…hahaha. Oh well, odds are for bettors. The teams play the games. GO CUBS GO!!!
