The Cubs dropped the series finale vs the Brewers on Wednesday 1-0. Only one thing to blame: the silent bats.
It definitely wasn’t Montgomery’s fault. You got to give it to the guy. He says he wants to be a starter, continues to perform admirably in the bullpen, then when he gets his chance to start, performs outstanding. This guy is pretty valuable to this team; he’s proving that again. Now is the perfect time to trade him.
That’s crazy. We should keep him as the 5th starter and move Chatwood out of here. Is it too quick to give up on Chatwood? I think so, but still… And I’m not saying his stuff is as good as Jake’s, but he has a lot of movement on his pitches. So what’s the problem? Maybe it’s a consistent release point? Jake struggled mightily early in his career. It wasn’t until he landed here in Chicago, and worked with Chris Bosio, that he turned into Jake the Great. Maybe we should trade Chatwood to the Tigers then???
I’m getting back to trading Montgomery. With his value going up, would a Russell-Montgomery package be enough for 6 months of Machado? Would it be too much for a rental? Getting back to the whole silent bat thing… Machado could help and…

Yes, he seems to be doing better than last year, but the results aren’t there. Believe me… I’m monitoring this situation closely as I continue to look for the low hangers on my fantasy roster. I’m looking at you right now Addison. Maybe that’s what he needs: for me to cut him from my fantasy team. Then, and only then, will he start to play better. In the mean time, his value is dropping a bit. Yet, you can’t overlook the glove work out there…
OK, let’s not overreact to one game. I’m glad it was during the day and I was at work because I would have been pissed as hell watching it. I didn’t see any highlights or lowlights either. It was against the Brewers, but just like 8 out of 10 was really good, 8 out of 11 isn’t bad either. So in the big scheme of things, we’re good. I mean, there’s only 98 more games to go this year… Really? Yes, really.
No need to dwell on this dud of a game any more. It’s time to move on. A weekend series in St. Louis awaits us. These games are just as important. Sitting 2.5 games up on the Birds, we need to keep them in our rearview… and root for the Phillies to beat the Brewers. Is it too soon to scoreboard watch? Never. I’m always happy to see the Cardinals or the Brewers lose; I always keep an eye on those scores.
So let’s get down to St. Louis and take care of business. In a series that will feature some great pitching matchups and some very hot weather, something has to give. Will the bats stay silent for both teams, or will there be an offensive explosion against the top pitching? I’m betting the latter… and I might actually bet it. Go Cubs!

It sucks when the bats go silent. So much talent and no results. A 1-0 shutout and the series goes to the brewcrew, as does first place…for now. Monty has been a great addition ever since 2016. He comes out of the pen, can save games (only the biggest ever!), and has made a bunch of quality starts. The guy has a ton of value that might come in handy at the deadline. Not saying that I want to trade him, I like the guy, but his value is unquestionable. I think it is too early to give up on chatwood. He has the stuff but something is holding him back, mainly control right now. Just like with Yu, I think better things are to come with Chatwood. Machado might be a deadline deal. Will it be to the Cubs? Time will tell. If he can help win another title, Im for it. I like Addy, but he is slumping again this year…only 2 home runs. His 2016 playoff performance will never be forgotten but it might be time to pull the trigger…better him than Javy. Back to the present, the Cubs head south to play the red turds. Hope the bats wake up. I predict some long balls from KB and Addy this weekend. 2 of 3 would be nice, a sWeep would be even better! GO CUBS GO!!!
